RAID! by _|_|_
I'm trying to find info on how Raid 5 works *in the case of 3 data drives + 1 parity*. I understand how exor'ing 2 data would yield a parity bit, but the 3data/1parity algorithm eludes me. I can't think of how you'd have enough info to recover, even if there were such a thing as a 3-input Exor....

SAN question by [email protected]
Have what is probably a pretty basic question about setting up a SAN. First off, I'm a networking guy at a fairly small but growing company. We (like everyone else on the planet ;) ) have a great deal of data which needs to be centralized and archived. I'm looking at the HP MSA1000 to meet our...

Serial attached scsi(SAS) by Krishna
Hello All, I had a quick question: I was considering the Serial attached scsi cards, that are slowly beginning to hit the market now. I had a little doubt, though, if I plugged in the SAS card into my machine, would it need any special drivers? ( I'm running Linux on my machine). Or would it show...

Any software libraries or techniques for using disks as large FIFO? by [email protected]
Hi, I have an application where digital data is streamed to me at a rate of 20 MB/sec. I have 6 250GB disks totallying 1.5 TB of storage. I want to store as much data as possible and age off old data as new data arrives. I need to allow "readers" to pull from the 20 MB/sec data stream at any...

Comparing some storage vendors by Dan Stromberg
I know this is fuzzy as heck, and yes, as a techie it makes me a bit squeamish, but if you have experience with the Storage Solutions of one or more of the following vendors, I'd appreciate it greatly if you could give me your subjective rating, on a scale from 1-10 rating (10 is best) of the...

AIT3 drive won't load tapes by Chris
Problem: trying to read some AIT-3 tapes created in a Rorke library. Background: Just got a Sony SDX-700C AIT-3 drive. It passes all diagnostics with flying colors. New tapes written by the Sony diag's are readable (block dumps) to my software. However, my friend's tapes, from a Rorke AIT-3...

Info on the IBM "Cypress" project? by Maury Markowitz
I recently wrote a wiki article on the 1360 Photo-Digital Store. While researching it I found mentions of two earlier projects, Cypress and Walnut. I believe the former was the first REALLY BIG storage system, and was used by the CIA (NSA?). Can anyone help me hunt down details on either of these...

HP MSA 1500 - Hubs for redundancy? by Kat
We have an MSA 1500 with dual controllers. Each had a single HBA, and each HBA attached to a seperate switch. When one of the HBA's in a server failed, we discovered that the path to the standby controller did not function, obviously. So we were told my HP to buy a switch or a hub to rpovide...

Best backup strategy when there is lots of re-structuring on HDD? by Peter Frank
Hi, I know there is backup software that allows incremental and differential backups so that it isn't always necessary to backup everything even if only some data were added or changed. The problem is that in my case there is also a lot of re-structuring going on with my data, i.e. data move from...

problems with Ultra DMA operations by Eug
Hi there! I have the following problem. I develop FPGA IP core for ATA HDD. I have tested it on 40 GB 2.5" Fujitsu HDD. PIO and Ultra DMA operated fine. When I switched to Maxtor DiamondMax HDD (3.5" 60 and 200 GB) it was found out that after I perform Ultra DMA write operation (DMA Write) I get...
