Question: Reliability of physical snapshots on SANs by
Erik H.
Hello!
As far as I know some SAN solutions are able to snapshot
a 'partition' on hardware level.
So after performing the snapshot (which takes a second or so)
directly on the SAN, I see partition P and the snapshot P'.
Changes to P are not visible in the snapshot P' and vice versa.
Now my...

EMC Clariion puzzle - can only see 1 LUN (sometimes) by
ohaya
Hi,
I have a PC connected to an EMC Clariion CX700 via an EMC (McData, I
think) FC switch. The HBA is a dual-port QLogic FC HBA. Right now, for
testing, I only have a single cable from the HBA to the FC switch, and
another single cable from the FC switch to the 2nd port of the CX700
SP-B.
On...

Could I hurt a DLT1 drive if I use a Cleaning Tape III on it?
Anyone know specifically how a DLT Cleaning Tape III is different from
a DLT VS Cleaning cart or a SDLT one?

gracefully killing a networker Disk Backup Option Clone by
Sean Watson
Hi folks,
We're currently staging some of our backups using Legato Networkers
Disk Backup Option which eventually clones those disk backps to tape.
What I'm trying to find out is this, is there a graceful way to kill
one of the clones. So far whenever I've needed to read from or write
to a disk...

FC controllers - exchangeable ? by
Matthias Schulz
Hi storage gurus,
I have a HP FC-AL controller to control a RAID box (at the moment just a
bunch of drives).
If this one controller breaks, do I have to use the SAME controller to
access the drives or can I just use ANY other FC-AL controller like the
QLA2100 (qlogic) ?
This question came up...

Hypervolume throughput specifications by
Diego Galindez
Hi all,
I'm looking for some specifications that I still wasn't able to find.
I know this will change depending on the type of physical disks and
their specifications, but is there some way to estimate the I/O
throughput an hypervolume can give ?
Suppose we say for a 72gb 10k RPM disk we can...

SAN replication - WAN by
Hal Kuff
Has anyone had a try at SAN FC/IP replication over a DS-3 with something
like 50ms of latency? We are wondering what the throughput in megabits/bytes
has been...it seems that the best way to go might be to use a switch that
bypasses IP and goes with a proprietary protocol....

NetVault Question by

I've been out of the network admin side of things for two years. I've
recently started working as a net admin for a company and one of my
primary responsibilities is backup. When I was responsible for this I
was using Legato and Arcserve, backing up to tape. In the new
position I will be setting...

NETVAULT-how to determine the use of a library or standalone device. by
Phil P.
I've got the pleasure of assuming backup admin position on a system
and technology I know nada about. We're using Netvault Version 7.10
Build 42. My experience in the past was with doing backups to tape,
up until two weeks ago I have never even heard of a VDL. So my
questions are these these:...
