Water spilled in PC - your thoughts? by
[email protected]
Toolpackinmama here,
My friends, never mind why I didn't know better than to perch the
Captain Kirk water globe I got for Xmas on top of my computer. It was
a narrow cylindrical water-filled teleporter that lit up n stuff, and
I just wanted to look at it a lot, OK?
I bumped my desk too hard when...

Cheap fire suppression system for a PC? by
ShadowTek[_5_]
I would like to install a small fire detection/suppression system for my
computer. I've seen a lot of rediculously expensive stuff online, but
I'd like to spend as little as possible.
Surely there's something that could be had for little more than the cost
of a small hand-held fire-extinguisher,...

CD drive question by
Mxsmanic
Is there any way to keep my CD-R and DVD drives from winding up every
time I open Windows Explorer? What makes Windows decide to start the
drives? They take 10 seconds to wind up (sounding like a jet engine
the whole time), and Windows won't expand a file tree until they come
up to speed. There...

I hate friends of friends with computers.... by
ToolPackinMama
I have a friend of a friend with a HP (Pavilion 7915) computer, and it
crapped out recently, so my friend's friend had another's friend's teen
son wipe the HD clean. Unfortunately, the friend's son who wiped the HD
didn't know what to do after that.
THAT'S WHEN THEY FINALLY THINK OF CALLING...

Help my PC is dying of heat exhaustion by

It is so hot here this summer that my computer crashes when it gets hot. I was looking into water cooled pc cases. Is it safe to buy a kit. Also the prices vary from £199 to £1,400.

Windows 8.1 File Manager always opens to "This PC"? by
John Doe[_9_]
I tried taking a file manager shortcut from a prior installation
(probably worked in Windows 8.0). Put it on the desktop. Pinned it
to Start. From Start, pinned it to Taskbar. And thought I was
getting away with something. But... That shortcut puts another
icon on the taskbar whenever it's open....

Time to uograde my old mouse? Optical? Cordless? by
Jon D
I am using an old style mouse with cable and rollerball.
I would like to upgrade it because it the rollerball gets clogged up
with dirt. And the mousewheel too picks up dust which then gets into
the internal workings and makes the scrolling action jerky.
However, in the past I have heard various...

Help - my rebate check expired by
Bill Schaible
I bought a 450 watt power supply at CompUSA and then sent in all the
paperwork to get a $20 rebate. When I got the rebate check I put it in my
wallet and promptly forgot about it.
It says: VOID after 12/30/2005. Has anybody had this problem and figured
out how to get another check. I didn't try...

Thinking "out of the box" when building a PC by
Mxsmanic
More and more, as I look at prefabricated cases for PCs, I ask myself:
what prevents someone from building a PC with no case? For example,
why couldn't you, say, build some sort of wooden mounting area into a
wall or a desk, then mount all the components to it, so that you have
something that...

drive keeps having partition problems by

I have a friend with a 250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA (in a Win
XP Pro machine) that's throwing weird partition issues at the drop of
a hat.
Last week, after the PC crashed in a game, the entire drive (3 primary
NTFS partitions) became inaccessible. Partition Magic 8 showed it as
one errored...

thing? (I know I don't need a powered screwdriver for...

USB port blew -- why? by
larrymoencurly
One of the ports of my NEC-based USB 2.0 card quit working because the
National Semiconductor LM3526 power controller chip failed. I'm
pretty sure that I didn't zap it with static (I always touch the
outher metal shell to the computer case before plugging it in) or try
to plug it in backwards. ...

New WD 160GB HDD only makes noise on winxp by
kghose
Hi,
I have an odd (to me) problem. But I'm sure it has a "change this
setting" solution.
I added a new WD Caviar 160GB HD (ATA-100) to my computer. I
partitioned it into 40GB NTFS and 120GB reiserfs. This drive is set as
master. I installed winXP SP2 on the 40GB NTFS partition.
A. When I run...

power supply overheating? by
Dan Brill
Hi,
This question began with my attempts to find out why the CPU fan in my new
homebuilt PC was rotating so fast (5000+ RPM) and, as a result, causing so
much noise. I have one of the newish Intel P4 3E (Prescott/90nm)
processors - the core temperature of which seems to vary between 60 and...
