Request advice on changing CMOS battery by
John S[_2_]
I look after a network of six computers for a club. On one computer, the
CMOS battery (CR2032) died today, and I replaced it.
However, I had to re-set several BIOS settings to get it back to operating
normally. Did this by starting up another computer with the same
motherboard and looking at the...

Convert Turntable Records to MP3? by
[email protected]
I want to convert some of my old choice LPs to MP3's, and thence to
CD/DVD disk.
I have a working turntable with what looks to be RCA output. I have
removed it from my Home Theater setup, and, so, I now do not have a
receiver or amp for the turntable.
It appears that I cannot simply connect this...

Connecting LSI MegaRAID 9260 to SAS Backplane by
David[_19_]
I'm looking at building a new server using an LSI MegaRAID 9260-4i card
and a Supermicro SC743TQ-865B-SQ case. What do I need to connect between
the RAID card and the backplane to get the case LEDs working? They're
supposed to be able to indicate when a drive fails. I know both the card
and the...

Greetings to all,
I have a "server room" (well...) with multiple machines, old and
inaccurate list (missing major PC upgrade and several Suns -
http://web.studenti.math.hr/~bubba/hardware.html).
The reason for quotation mark on server room is, naturally,...

Is there such a thing as a USB radio? by
dos-man
I'm jumping through a lot hoops here to record music off of FM radio.
* I've got my radio connected to my DVD recorder to record several
hours of music. Then I have to take the DVD-RW to my computer and I'm
using dreamlinux to create/edit MP3s of the individual songs. Finally,
I jump into windows...

Flakey USB Ports and USB Mice by
Jed
I seem to have bad luck with USB ports on both my homebuilt machines
(a couple of MSI 48N Neo Platinum/AMD 64 CPU) and USB mice (several
Logitech (MX Revolution and G7 and a couple of off brands) and an HP
DV5 notebook.
One by one the ports I connect the mice to eventually stop recognizing
the...

Cheap fire suppression system for a PC? by
ShadowTek[_5_]
I would like to install a small fire detection/suppression system for my
computer. I've seen a lot of rediculously expensive stuff online, but
I'd like to spend as little as possible.
Surely there's something that could be had for little more than the cost
of a small hand-held fire-extinguisher,...

Recommended power supply wattage. by
David W. Hodgins
I've been having some trouble with a new system (about a month old),
that spontaneously reboots, with no error messages in /var/log/syslog,
or other log files. The system will run fine for a couple of days,
and reboot 4 times the next day, sometimes rebooting again while still
running the startup...

USB SATA caddy size limit? by
GT[_6_]
I've been looking at a few external drive caddies, but the cheap ones
mention that they can take up to 400GB hard drive. Why the limit? Doesn't
seem right to me - surely a SATA controller (internal or external) could
manage any current size of SATA driver?

What after XP? by
XP-dinosaur
I'm a home user on XP Pro. I need to work out what OS to specify on
a prebuilt machine (one for me and one for a friend). It's either
Windows 7 or Vista.
Although I'm fairly technical I haven't kept up to date with details
of the newer Windows. I haven't even seen either Win 7 or Vista...
