boot hangs after detecting drives by Dave
On a friends' pc the boot sequence completes the memory check, detects and identifies the HD and CD drives then hangs. It is not even possible to get into the BIOS settings. I'm guessing a problem with the motherboard, perhaps with the BIOS chip itself. Any ideas? It happened 'overnight' in that...

HELP: FAILED RAID 0 by winux
I am guessing I am screwed. I have a Windows Server that had RAID 0 on it (I didn't set it up that way, previous tech guy did). It is a ATA/133 RAID built into the motherboard. I got a message from the server saying that there is not enough disk space. So, I slid off the side panel on the case...

Optical Drive: IDE Secondary Master vs Slave by Bob
When I built this computer I put in 3 removable hard drive bays and 1 NEC 3540 optical drive. I put the optical drive as IDE Secondary Slave, mainly because it would only fit in the bottom bay because of the mainboard getting in the way - so I cabled it as Secondary Slave for convenience. Most of...

Ti4200 not working with nVidia driver by [email protected]
I bought a GeForce4 Ti4200/64MB second-hand from an online auction last year and my kids have been using it ever since. The model # is 8870 which I believe to be an MSI product. I'm selling the whole computer and since the new owner, a novice with computers, wants a bigger HDD, I have to install...

Brasso Rules! by Bob
I had an old worn video disc - you know the kind with all sorts of nasty-looking scratches at random as though people played Frisbee with their dog - and it would not succumb to a successful backup operation. I retired several times but all I got was read errors towards the end of a disc that was...

For people curious about 4 meg vs 8 meg cams by [email protected]
The small point and shoot cams 3-4 megapixels Ive always wondered about the difference between it and say a well rated 8 meg especially with a better lens etc. Was there a huge difference? Ive read some good reviews on the 8080 by that firm which shall go nameless. Its gotten excellent reviews...

Two Optical Drives On The Same IDE Channel by Bob
I put my NEC 3540 as Secondary Master and an older LG CD-RW as Secondary Slave. They were jumpered as M and S - no CS. The BIOS had no problems identifying them during POST, but Win2K/SP4 hung at the part where it is doing PnP - just before it flashes the KB lights. Win2K can handle either unit...

Dead: Motherboard or CPU? by [email protected]
My machine crashed, and now when I press the power button nothing happens - no BIOS screen, no LEDs, no fans. I tried a new power supply, same result. I tried a different power switch, same result. The motherboard is an ARIMA HDAMB. I noticed that if I plug the 24pin power supply connector into...

Open rack vs. enclosed cabinet by Yoann Roman
I'm looking to move my servers to a rack/cabinet in a 7-ft by 5.5-ft room. About 6 tower servers, 1 rack server, 4 rack switches, 3 routers/telecom, and 3 non-rack UPS. Would an enclosed cabinet work in terms of cooling? Any general recommendations of open rack vs. enclosed cabinet? Not much...

I went to a computer store today, and I found out that the Athlon64 bit for socket 754 if more expensive than the one for socket 939 (same speed and same L2 cache). Is socket 939 more powerful than socket 754? What are the benefits? -- Thanks, Admin.
