What is the maximum clock rate given the state of today's technology?| by GreenXenon
|Hi: What is the maximum physically-possible clock rate of a 1-bit-per-cycle, single-core, purely-serial processor? Thank a bunch, Green Xenon

I'm about to buy a E8600 and was wondering if there were certain model to look out for, I'm far from an expert on this one but there is stepping and sometimes things like SLB9L, do these series mean anything to me the end user? Jim

Overclocking so easy even your grandma can do it by Jim[_31_]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GR5_X1CfUA A schizo Intel ad on OCing that tells you how easy it is while at the end in not quite fine print tells OCing is bad.

Core 2 Extreme QX9650 rig, my O/C swansong? by ~misfit~[_15_]
Phil recently posted here about how the 'mighty have fallen' w/r/t some of the heroic tales of overclocks here in years past. I agreed, saying that there is so much power in modern CPUs that the benefit of squeezing every last MHz out of your system is hardly apparent other than when you run...

Laptop Super Heatsink... by J. Smith
Hello, I am looking to overclock my laptop which has a Pentium-M "Dothan" core as the CPU. I spoke with another individual who performed the overclocking mod on exactly the same model of laptop that I have. He talked about the CPU overheating a lot because the heatsink was insufficient in...

Recomended 1156 processor? by Chuck Sadler
BTW, ram does not do as much as you think it does in the gaming aspect of things. From what i have read, going from 1000mhz** to 1600mhz** will give you only a few fps increases. For gaming its more about your video card and processor. (**:Edited)

any benchmark utilities similar to Phoronix? by Orson Cart
In the Gatesian world, I used stuff like Sandra to benchmark PCs. I was seeking something as a Linux live CD, so I could check either Windoze or Penguin boxes. I came across Phoronix Test Suite, which seems almost what I want. It is intended for newer systems with 64-bit CPU and lots of RAM. I also...

How the mighty have fallen by Phil Weldon[_5_]
Sad to see how few posts a.c.h.o gets these days. I certainly haven't done my part lately. I haven't even set up my desktop since I moved 18 months ago - and a fairly decent lthree-year-old laptop (T7300/3 GB/ 500 GB/nVidia 8600M GT/1680 x 1050) isn't a lot of overclocking fun (maybe 20% for the...

Applying TX-4? by Thomas Andersson
Any trick to applying this? I bought a syringe of TX-4 paste to use in my new system but can't apply it. I rolls up, rolls of the CPU, sticks to the spreader and does just about anything but stick to the CPU. It's VERY thick and hard to control. Anyone have any suggestions?

safe cpu temp by coltrane
I am new to overclocking. I have a 2.6mhz quad core i5 running at 3.6mhz. The idle cpu temp hovers around 60c. When I run a stress test using Prime95 the temp goes to 95c. How much heat can a cpu take? thanks john

Overclocking x710 BE by numbnuts2
If you install a fast, uncluttered OS (say, Ubuntu/Gnome minus unneeded distro stuff), removing all unneeded extensions, you won't need to overclock. With your cool hardware, your machine will fly. Good luck! Always use a router, Grasshopper.

Computer hands, with solid ON HD LED on a rare basis. by Bob F
I had a couple "hangs" on my "new" PC where the Harddisk LED turns on continuously and the performance goes to near zero. The PC consists of a Gigabyte Ga-P31DS3L motherboard, Q8200 processor, eVGA 790 GTO videocard, 2x2GB Crucial PCII-6400 memory, 2 SATA harddrives, SATA DVD-R drive, OCZ 500W...

Boot fails after shutdown, works after power off. by Bob F
I am building a new system using a used Q8200, used Gigabyte GA-p31-DS3L, new 2x2GB PC6400 RAM. I have had it overclocked to 2.8 GHz, running fine overnight with Prime 95 torture test on all 4 cores. The BIOS is set for 400 FSB and "Auto" power settings. The problem. The machine has begun to...

Gigabyte GA-P31-ES3G Manual Vcore Problem by Ed Light
I'm overclocking my E5200, or trying to. I set voltages to Manual, Vcore to 1.35, and in the Health BIOS screen it shows near that, I have C1E and EIST disabled. In Windows, cpu-z and Gigabyte Easy Tune show at or near 1.25, like they do when voltages aren't on Manual. I have the chipset...

BIOS setting "Memory over voltage" shows value in red by Maurice Batey[_2_]
In the BIOS Setup 'Ai Tweaker' menu of my Asus P5QL/EPU motherboard I just happened to notice that the BIOS setting "Memory over voltage" is shown as "2.10000" in *red*. I find the red colour scary. Why red? Would I lose anything by changing the setting to 'Auto'? (What are the implications of...
