P4P800E: Boot From ThumbDrive? by (PeteCresswell)
Stepped through the CMOS menus, but nothing jumps out at me except for the "USB Mass Storage Config" section - which doesn't seem to recognize my thumb drive. My guess is that the thumb drive needs tb plugged into one of the MB USB ports and not a card's port. Correct? If I've got that part...

Small Laptop/Higher Rez Screen? by (PeteCresswell)
Seems like all the 10" and below laptop screens are 1024 x 600 or smaller. I currently have an eee901. The form factor is exactly what I want for a walking-around PC. Even the 10" would be small enough. But the 1024 x 600 screen just isn't getting it for me. Bottom line: does anybody,...

P5Q-SE2: SATA II? by (PeteCresswell)
I'm using the P5Q-SE2 for my Windows Home Server box. Got a half-dozen of Western Digital's Caviar Green drives in it. While trying to track down a flaky drive, it's dawned on me that SATA II is a lot faster than plain old Serial ATA - as in twice as fast. Being basically clueless, but looking...

Mobo: FoxConn G33 Equivalent? by (PeteCresswell)
Got this very nice case from a trashed Dell Inspiron 530. Mobo appears tb bad. FoxConn G33m02 as in http://tinyurl.com/3tvqe4r Socket 775/SouthBridge Intel ICH9, 4 slots. Does anybody know of an Asus board that would:

ZenBook: Loses Touch Screen Functionality by (PeteCresswell)
Zenbook UX302L running Windows 8.1. Several weeks ago the "Touch" feature of the screen had stopped working maybe 5 times already. The workaround was Control Panel | Troubleshooting | Hardware and Sound | Hardware and Devices. It presented two instances of "Enable USB Input Device" - and the...

ZenBook on AC: Battery Still Supplying Power? by (PeteCresswell)
The Real Question: Am I extending my battery's lifetime by running on AC whenever possible, or is it the same as running the battery down and re-charging? i.e. When running on AC, is the battery still supplying power and just being re-charged on-the-fly? Or is the ZenBook smart enough to...

.BAT File To Re-Enable USB Device? by (PeteCresswell)
My Zenbook is set to hibernate if cover closed with no external power, but do nothing if cover closed with external power connected. When I close the cover and then disconnect external power, it does what I would hope: hibernates. The rub is that each time that happens, the USB device associated...

PA248 Monitor: Assigning "1" & "2" Butons To Inputs? by (PeteCresswell)
I hop back-and-forth between two inputs a *lot*. Seems like I should be able to set the PA248 up so that pressing the "1" button selects one input and pressing the "2" button selects another. I've tried, but can't make it happen. Is there a way? -- Pete Cresswell

Windows Home Server Mobo? by (PeteCresswell)
Got a P5Q-SE2 in my WHS box right now, but sometime in the near future I'll probably demote it to use in a family member's PC. My main agenda for the WHS box is to figure out some way for it to go to sleep and wake up on a daily schedule. e.g. Sleep from 0100 to 0700 and be awake the rest of the...

901: Upgraded To 2 Gigs.. Now What? by (PeteCresswell)
More-or-less as an act of faith (or was it foolishness?) I upgraded my eeePC running XP Pro to 2 gigs. For thirty bucks, it seemed tb a no-brainer. OTOH, I don't recall TaskMan every telling me I was using much more than a half-gig. My thoughts were of comments on the graphics...

P4P800-E: Sound Card On The Way Out? by (PeteCresswell)
Onboard sound "card" - actually not a card in the true sense... but some modules on the MB that perform that function. Sound from this thing has been degrading over the past months. Humming, buzzing.... and a hum whenever SysBeep fires. First thing, I have to wonder if I'm jumping to cause. Can...

Siticking with XP, New MB: 32 or 64-Bit by (PeteCresswell)
My plan is to stick with Windows XP Pro until my main client switches to Vista - and, hopefully, that will be quite awhile. Meanwhile, it's starting to look like there might be a motherboard replacement in my future bco weird things happening with my P4-P800-E. Tried unplugging/reseating...

Asus 901: Installing XP, "NTLDR Is Missing" by (PeteCresswell)
Booted from MSDN DVD, told it to install XP, SP1. Chose the larger of the two SD discs just on GPs. Specified NTFS as the file system. Install seemed to go normally, but when the 901 went to reboot, it posted a message "NTLDR Is Missing" and that was the end of it.

OT? Dongle Preservation by (PeteCresswell)
Just got an MS "Arc Mouse" for my Asus 901. Pretty slick: folds to a small size for storage, unfolds for comfort. But it comes with the world's smallest dongle. Unfortunately not quite small enough to leave plugged in when the PC is put in it's bag.

901 XP: Wireless? by (PeteCresswell)
Re-formatted my Linux 901 and used nLite to install Windows XP Pro from my MSDN discs. Seems to have worked: boot time 25 seconds compared to 27 with Xandu and 1:01 with Ubuntu. A little over 3 gigs on the system drive. But I can't figure out how to get wireless working. I went through the...

901 Charger: 12v Home Free? by (PeteCresswell)
I just noted that the stated output of my 901's charger is 12v DC. Unencumbered by any knowledge of electrical stuff, it sounds to me like the 901 can be charged just by a direct connection to a 12v automobile battery - as long as the polarity is correct. Or am I just wishing? If not, downside...

P5Q-SE2: Scheduled Sleep/Wake? by (PeteCresswell)
Used a P5Q-SE2 to build my television server that now lives in a closet. Right now, it's running 24-7. I'd like to have it go to sleep mode 3 (or whatever the one is that takes almost zero power) at, say, 1:00 am and then wake itself up at, say, 6:00 am. Windows XP.

P5Q-SE2: Auto Boot At Power-On? by (PeteCresswell)
Seems like there's got tb some way to tell the board to start booting as soon as it sees power. A jumper? My agenda is using it as a server. It lives in a closet, connected to a UPS. When power fails and then, sometime later, comes back on; I want the PC to boot up without anybody having to go...

UX302L: Keeping Battery at 50% ? by (PeteCresswell)
Recently read some credible comments to the effect that Li batteries last longer if kept at 50% rather than 100%. My UX302L rarely goes off of AC and when it does it usually needs to last less than an hour on battery power. So.... Is there anything I can run that will tell Asus' battery manager...
