BIOS setting "Memory over voltage" shows value in red by Maurice Batey[_2_]
In the BIOS Setup 'Ai Tweaker' menu of my Asus P5QL/EPU motherboard I just happened to notice that the BIOS setting "Memory over voltage" is shown as "2.10000" in *red*. I find the red colour scary. Why red? Would I lose anything by changing the setting to 'Auto'? (What are the implications of...

CPU Temperature by Nel
I'm certain that my CPU (P4 3.06gHz) is running far too hot and is the cause of my unstable PC. The manufacturer claims the temp is normal for this type of system - which is more like a laptop than a desktop, as the motherboard and cards are built in behind the TFT screen and the hardrive is built...

help, please, with crashing... by Uncle Vinnie
I am trying to upgrade an Intel D815EEa with a 1.2 Piii and Upgradeware 370GU adaptor, but it has been crashing. This board, similar to one in a Dell Dimension 4100, has been tested to work with both the PowerLeap and Upgradeware adaptors. In my case, the board runs fine with an 800mhz Piii. I...

Flaky P2B - suggestions requested by P2B
One of my venerable P2B/Tualatin systems is misbehaving, and I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to try next. It's a P2B-S with a P3-S 1.4 on a Slot-T adapter and 512MB of Micron PC133. Processor is running stock (1.4Ghz), mainboard overclocked to 133Mhz FSB, stock PCI clock. I was clocking it at...

Which PSU? by Thomas
I'm getting ready to finally pick up my components. I'm just still in doubt about my PSU / case. Originally I ordered the Antec Atlas, which includes an Antec Truepower 2.0 550Watt. http://www.cluboverclocker.com/reviews/cases/antec/Atlas/index.htm This PSU features two 12V rails, each offering...

FAT32 or NTFS for WXP? by Lou
What is the file system most game PC users set their HD to, FAT32 or NTFS? Does it matter for gaming or are there problems if its all set to NTFS? This is for WXP home and boot drive of 60GB and second drive of 40GB. Was mostly considering NTFS because it can have files over the 4.?GB limit for...

Is liquid cooling any good? by James A. Donald
Most modern CPUs have the capability to report their temperature -- shows up in bios stats. Seems to me as measured by CPU self report, liquid cooling, which costs over two hundred dollars, does not get you anything markedly better than air cooling, which costs about forty dollars. Has anyone...

Overclocking an Aopen Mx 46 by Newfdog
Hi all.... I have never tried overclocking before and thought I might give it a try. I have an Aopen MX 46 motherboard with a P4 1.7GHz processor installed. According to Aopen this board has lots of overclocking ability but I don't really understand the translation on their website. Apparently I...

Used to overclock, but now problems by Rich Sias
I was overclocking a dual celeron 366 to 550 and sometimes more until last summer when I had difficulty installing some software for work. I Regular clocked it to install and run to not have any problems. Now I can't set it back. I must have changed the numbers in my BIOS too much. So I tried...

?A thermally conductive dielectric putty/clay ? by Ken Maltby
Anybody know of such a substance? I want to try pressing the back of the Motherboard into something with the expansion coil from an air conditioner imbedded in it. Maybe the conformal coating would prevent shorting but I'm a little leery of using an electrically conductive substance. I'm...

Opinions on Thermaltake PSUs please. by ~misfit~
I've gotta get a new PSU, my current no-name 400W is only outputting around 3.0v on the 3.3v rail. I can *just* swing the money for a Thermaltek 420W Active PFC PSU( TT420APD, W0008R ): http://www.thermaltake.com/purepower/w00089.htm It's $NZ126. Other than that, the only brands my prefered...

Ideal plastic tubing for water cooled computer? by Thomas Reat
What type of plastic tubing might be suitable for use in a water cooled computer? The highest priority is to prevent leaks. So tubing that can't possibly split apart, can withstand heat, can be both force-fit onto connectors and crimped on without damage. (or glued on with glue that's made for this...

EIDE vs. S ATA? by Boe
Hello, I've read the specs on the ATA vs. EIDE drives. I'm curious if anyone has actually tested an ATA on the same motherboard as they have an EIDE and noticed a difference. Of course I'm talking about similar hard drives 7200, 8mb, 100+gig. If there is a better newsgroup for this please let...

Flood of virus and patch warnings from Microsoft. Is a new worm loose or is it spam? by Phil Weldon
Has anyone in the newsgroup had this experience today (September 18)? I've received over 40 messages from Microsoft today, most with attachments warning of the importance of security. The messages are in html and the contents seem to be legitimate, and the 'smart' URL's are legitimate, BUT...
