45nm Penryn (Core2Quad) hit by erratum too by
Yousuf Khan
I couldn't believe my eyes, but the articles seem almost identical, you
just substitute Intel for AMD, Penryn for Phenom, etc. And you get the
same reaction and effect.

OT-(slightly) LCD image burn-in by
George Macdonald
Interesting article he
http://www.behardware.com/articles/615-1/lcds-with-persistent-images.html
And here the folklore was that image burn-in was only on CRTs & plasma...
though this is most apparent on overdrive LCDs and apparently recoverable
on some LCDs depending on the cause.

64-bit Semprons by
Nudge
Hello everyone,
Now that AMD sells "64-bit enabled Semprons", I am left to wonder:
What are the differences between 90nm "64-bit enabled" 754-pin
Semprons and 90nm 939-pin Athlon 64s?
1. The Sempron's memory controller is single channel while the
Athlon's is dual channel. Is that right?

Core 2 vs Xeon for development use by

I'm trying to understand the significant differences are between the
normal workstation-type processors (Core 2 Duo, Extreme) and the
comparable core-count Xeon chips. Xeons appear to be oriented to
server use; why is that?
I'm looking into getting a new machine. This is not for gaming; it is

Award BIOS flash update failed (I think) by
Remco
Since I needed to install a 120G hdd I upgraded my BIOS to 6.00 from
4.51PG yesterday. I bought this update at esupport.com after running
their tool to identify my old BIOS version.
The upgrade itself worked like a charm, no errors during install. At
reboot I saw an error message flashing by saying...

New desktop and mobile Athlon 64's announced by
Yousuf Khan
Busy day for processor announcements today. AMD introduced a new desktop A64
3400+ speedking, which makes it the first 3400 rated processor on the
market, coming out ahead of any Pentium 4 3.4Ghz processor. Anandtech
actually calls this A64 3400+ "the death of the FX-51"....

registered vs. unbuffered compatibility (P5BWD2) by
David Madore
Hi,
This _must_ be a FAQ, yet I couldn't find the answer anywhere (or
rather, I found completely conflicting answers):
Will Registered ECC RAM work on a motherboard that calls for
"Unbuffered non-ECC / ECC RAM"?
(First, I'm not even sure how "Unbuffered non-ECC / ECC RAM" is to be
parsed: it...

Opteron vs. Nocona benchmarks by
Yousuf Khan
First bunch of Nocona benchs have come out, this one from GamePC:
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=noconaopteron&page=1&cookie%5Ftest=1
Looks like the Nocona isn't a bad performer, seems to be better at
workstation-style applications than at server-style applications.

30 Watt Opteron by
Yousuf Khan
AMD is planning to introduce low-power and mid-power Opterons in the first
half of 2004. They'll be used for blade servers. The most interesting thing
about these new Opterons is that they will be available in the 100-, 200-,
and 800-series.
I've noticed that a lot of blade servers seem to use...
