Is a Celeron OK for me? by
Peter Mount
Hello
I'm a part time IT student (studying to be a programmer) and I'm trying to
start up an IT business (as well as working full time).
I'm currently using a Pentium 2-350 with 448 mb PC-100 SDRAM and an ATI
Radeon 64mb video card with a SoundBlaster 64 card. I'm using ColdFusion MX
to develop a...

PC processor power consumption by
U. U.
I am going to finally replace my 6 year old IBM Aptiva. Since I expect the
cost of electricity to go up steeply after the election, my main goal is to
keep down power consumption and heat.
I know some of the AMD processors can run at only about 5 watts in standby
mode, but I can't find similar...

Intel Shelton processor by
Yousuf Khan
http://arstechnica.com/news/posts/20040811-4091.html
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=17790
Apparently it's based on a Celeron 90nm running at 1Ghz with no cache
(presumably no L2 cache rather than L1). I assume that this means that it's
a P4-based Celeron rather than some P-M-based Celeron....

Asrock w/ Celeron "D" 2.4ghz/533FSB only shows 133bus in Belarc by
Ruckman
I have messed with my BIOS settings but the clock speed is "locked"
according to the menu. When I run the Belarc advisor (www.belarc.com)
is only shows the bus as 133mhz. Should it not read "533mhz"?
Basically how do you know for sure your CPU is running @ 533mhz?
thx in advance....Scott

P4 Extreme Edition discontinued by
Yousuf Khan
This article states that the original P4EE is being discontinued. It doesn't
mention whether all further EE's will be discontinued or not, but it seems
to be the implication.
I wonder if that means AMD will also discontinue its FX line of Athlon...

Interesting read about upcoming K9 processors by
Yousuf Khan
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20040726PR202.html
This interview with Tyan president Symon Chang provided the following
quotes:
"Around 2006, when the market moves to AMD's next generation of chips, you
will be able to go over 8-way. What I mean is that with eight sockets, and
dual cores, you...

COPPER CPU SHIMS: The Definitive Answer !! by
rms
Ok, my gut feeling was that installing a copper shim was a mod that could
provide measurable benefits. My reasoning was as follows: Presently my
Maze3 waterblock is only slightly warm at the edges of the block, indicating
a large thermal gradient between the center water channel and the...

Is Itanium the first 64-bit casualty? by
Yousuf Khan
Interesting reading here, and very common-sense. Itanium may be the next
casualty in the 64-bit wars, when Itanium was the one that caused the 64-bit
wars to start in the first place.

Newisys' 32-way Opteron chipset by
Yousuf Khan
Newisys is talking about bringing out a 32-way Opteron server by next year
with a chipset which I assume they developed themselves called "Horus".
Horus seems to be a coherent Hypertransport switcher chipset.
This may become a direct competitor of the upcoming Serverworks/Sun chipset
which is also...

Have an HP Pavillion 8370 PC (oldie) with P2, any CPU upgrades possible? by
Robert Casey
Yeah, it's an old box (1998) with a 333MHz Pentium 2
CPU. I could get an upgrade CPU for not a lot of $
from a web site "computergeeks.com" IIRC but I don't
know if the motherboard would support it. Anyone know
of this line of HP machines?
I replace the hard drive with a much bigger one...

A good dual 64 AMD (Socket-754 ) motherboard - does it exist ? by
PolishRuben
I am about to build a new box for myself. I am not looking for a
comparison, which one is better - xenon or amd64, because the answer
is, I think, pretty obvious. What I really need a help with is to
choose the right MB. Right now I use Gigabyte 7N400 Pro, with nForce2
chipset, raid0 and nVidia...

Why didn't AMD just give us the max die temp for A64?, isn't that where
these (754) boards are reading the CPU temp from anyways?
And what do they mean by "case", the metal heat spreader on top of the

AMD quietly introduces locally-strained silicon process by
Yousuf Khan
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/08/20/amd_90nm_strained/
Though this story is about the new 90nm process using strained-silicon
techniques, it's also known that the older 130nm process also uses it. This
is kind of interesting because both IBM and Intel were competing against
each other to...
