finally tossing all my old floppy disks - the end of an era by
Andrew Hamilton
I recently connected my 3 1/2" floppy drive to one of my systems, and
discovered that all my old floppies are no longer readable. And, most
of them can't even be formatted successfully.
No real surprise here, since most of the disks are well over 10 years
old, including lots of those AOL...

HDD quit working by
InOverMyHead
What does this mean?
Hard drive (Maxtor 80GB int.) is recognized on bootup POST but not by
windows. Computer can't boot from it, and does not recognize it from a DOS
floppy boot.
Removed and installed as a slave in another machine: POST does properly
identify it as before but windows (Explorer or...

Any good internal memory card readers? by
Ant[_3_]
Hello.
Is it me or are those desktop IBM PCs' internal memory card readers
really bad? I owned two of them (cost $15 IIRC) so far. Their big
CompactFlash/CF memory card reader slots' pins keep getting bent every
time I insert an old memory card. I even do it slowly and softly.
I did not have...

How many programs before you start again? by
Franklin
Been getting ready to build a second PC. Made me review how much
stuff I have got on my present system.
Using 'MyUninstaller' http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/myuninst.html
I can see I have 511 installed programs!
In addition there are those programs which didn't need any
installation. I reckon I...

Fujitsu - MPG and MPF series hard drives - what was the result ??? by
no-name
I remember reading the debacle about some Fujitsu hard drives -
( a faulty controller chip from Cirrus Logic wasn't it ? )
now, a friend has turned up a pair of Fujitsu's
that have been "faulty or dead" for as long as she can remember
trying them in a PC - the auto check in the BIOS
simply shows...

Slow transfer speed to/from external USB/Firewire hard drive by
Mark Huebner
I recently bought a Western Digital 200Gb, 7200rpm hard drive and put it in
an external Oxford 911 drive enclosure (Triumph Venus 3.5" aluminum). I did
some transfer speed tests and found out that the firewire is about 35-70%
faster than USB 2.0. However, the transfer rates I'm getting on...

A8N Sli Deluxe Disk Boot Failure by

Hey all, I've recently been trying to fix my mothers computer so
naturally I placed her harddrive into my computer to see if it worked.
I bought a new drive and put it in my now working computer also, alas
neither of them worked. The old HD I could have reformatted but I'm
trying to salvage...

HD9-U2LA LANDRIVE Lan Drive NAS storage device issues by
[email protected]
I purchased a network attached storage device called a Lan Drive model
HD9-U2LA and I think it was from RJTech but the documentation indicates
it is a USBEX device (http://www.usbex.com/landrive)
The drive is either a network device or a USB device (not both at
once). It works, but I have a few...

Why HDTach shows RAID0 slower than JBOD on 3ware 3W-7450? by
hh
I connected 4 units Seagate ST340016A ATA100 to a 3W-7450 (firmware &
Windows driver 7.7.0) and compared read & write speeds between RAID0 &
JBOD with HDTach 2.7 on unformatted drives, but very puzzled to find
RAID0 (4-drive striped 1024K write-cache enabled) slower than JBOD
speeds.
Here are the...

what's the story with usb flash drives which suddenly need formatting? by

need formatting?

normally working drive telling you that they need formatting. I...

USB HD no longer recognized! by
[email protected]
I bought a new 80G Toshiba 2.5" HD to use as a backup USB drive for my
ancient desktop.
I run Win 98SE on the 233Mhz desktop.
At first the desktop couldn't see more than 10G of the USB drive.
Someone suggested updating the Fdisk to a newer version.
I did and bingo, it could now see 80G.
I...

Best Way to Back up by

I have been reading about many different ways to back up data. Is
there a popular method that is used today? I am trying to decide on
Tapes or DVDs or any other method. Is there a convention method that is
used today? I would probably be backing up the system once a week. I
would be backing up...
