RFC: Sony Playstation-3 the next IBM PC? by
Jan Panteltje
I will write this, because it is a sort of funny conclusion I came to
yesterday.
It affects this groups subject, no I am not a gamer, do not have a ps2 or
xbox no.
This is the 'train of thought':
Many people in Europe use an old PC (say K6 or Duron) as video recorder for
digital satellite TV,...

Single-bit corrected errors by
Keith
I've been moving disk drives (DVD and HDD) around and upgrading OS
(SuSE 9.0 to 10.0) over the past couple of days. In the process
I've been playing with BIOS to get the drives ordered the way I
wanted (and figure out who listens to BIOS drive ordering ;).
While trying to figure out some...

1.485 Gbit/s to and from HDD subsystem by
Spoon
Hello,
I've been asked to build a system capable of reading and writing "raw"
high-definition video, namely HD-SDI.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Digital_Interface
AFAIK no single HDD can handle 1.485 Gbit/s (186 MB/s).
I suppose one way around this problem is RAID 0 (striping).

Athlon 64's: a shared memory bus? by
pigdos
Do the Athlon 64's feature a shared memory bus? Can the north bridge in
Athlon 64 systems directly read/write system memory (without utilizing the
A64's built-in memory controller)? I'm guessing the north bridge can, but
I'm not sure.

AMD's 45nm technology compared against Intel's by
Yousuf Khan
Interesting the AMD 45nm technology does not yet include High-K & Metal
Gates (HKMG), yet it uses 15-30% less power. Of course AMD does use SOI,
which Intel doesn't. So it looks like currently SOI utilizes power
better than HKMG, but AMD also plans to use HKMG in later 45nm revision.

Pentium M to become THE CPU by
Nathan Bates
Pentium M has all the right ingredients for total world domination:
low power consumption, short pipeline stages, hi-performance.
Pentium M will kill its brother Pentium 4 and its ******* cousin
Athlon.
PowerPC is a Neanderthal that's nearing its end (Jobs figured that
out).
But ARM will survive...

Intel's FB-DIMM, any kind of RAM will work for your controller? by
Yousuf Khan
Intel is introducing a type of DRAM called FB-DIMMs (fully buffered).
Apparently the idea is to be able to put any kind of DRAM technology (e.g.
DDR1 vs. DDR2) behind a buffer without having to worry about redesigning
your memory controller. Of course this intermediate step will add some
latency to...
