I have Acronis True Image version 8. It's an older version, about 5 years old. This version allows one to clone drives. In my new comp, I have SATA drives. I'm wondering if this version of TI will clone this type of drive. I seem to get the impression from reading some posts in forums that...

Firewire cords and outlets? by DJW
First question can a firewire 4 pin outlet or cord transfer data at 800 Mbps ever? I know it is also dependant on the external devise whether it can achieve 800 mbps rates but can 6 pin devices transfer at 800 Mbps? Or does the connection have to have a 9 pin at each end and a 9-pin cord for...

HDD problems causing Kernel panics in Linux/Debian? by Ant[_3_]
I was poking around to see why my old Linux/Debian box was rarely and randomly crashing with kernel panics. I read that its errors can be found in /var/log/syslog (dmesg didn't show me anything related to Kernel panics that I could find): # cat /var/log/syslog .... Mar 4 23:12:07 foobar...

setting up a RAID-1 array with a non-empty hdd? by yawnmoth
I have a hard drive whose contents I'd like to back up. I was thinking about using RAID-1 mirroring to do this. The thing I'm considered about is... will my drive be wiped? My second drive I don't really care about - that drives purpose is to just serve as a backup. But my main drive... I do...

On-disk format of fakeraid raid1 by bigby
Hi all I have knowledge of Linux but not much in Windows. I would like to set up a home server with RAID-1 (2 disks) in Windows, including boot, hence I need to leverage the fakeraid in the mainboard (mainboard which I still have to buy) (*) All will be nice except if/when the mainboard breaks.

External Storage for Laptop by [email protected]
I want to add external storage to my Dell Studio XPS. It has a built-in eSATA port so the Seagate FreeAgentXTreme is an attractive choice. However, I would prefer to set up a 3-drive RAID 5 array in order to get fault tolerance. Dell Tech Support stated that the built-in controller supports RAID...

A good benchmarking program for disks? by Yousuf Khan[_2_]
I need to find a benchmark program that will measure transfer rates to individual hard disks, over all kinds of connections (IDE, SATA, USB, etc.). Something that's somewhat similar to memory testers which can also determine failure patterns, in addition to raw throughput. What's...

bad sectors on a mybook WD usb drive by Rod Speed
sobriquet wrote: I've lost some data on a 2 tb WD mybook usb drive. When I did a full scan, it found something like 3 mb in bad sectors. However, when I reformatted the drive, somehow all bad sectors were recovered. Apparently, there is some redundancy in diskspace, so it can allocate...
