DVD/CD writer - do any brands last? by Ant[_3_]
On 7/20/2010 12:06 AM PT, John Turco typed: I bought a generic eSATA PCI card, too. External hard drives that the only way to go for backups now. Quite true, and I crave eSATA's superior speed; USB 2.0 is merely too damned slow. Yeah, well USB3 just came out so...

External DVD recognized as removable disk by cpliu
I have this setup (generic internal DVD writer put in a external case with firwire connection) that worked fine in the past. I took the DVD out and connected to another PC so I could install a game from the DVD. I put it back and now my regular PC recognize it as removable disk instead DVD. How...

Corrupt Backup by Animenia[_11_]
Hi. A customer came into the store the other day with a Toshiba external 400 GB Harddrive and had a problem I've never encountered before. He had done a backup of his photos using the backup software that came along with the harddrive. Since I am at home while writing this and not at work I can't...

Drives that do or don't run hot by Tom Del Rosso[_3_]
My ST315003 runs at lease 5 deg C hotter than other drives in the same position. I've looked at Tom's Hardware and such places, but they focus on problem drives, and I want a positive identification of a drive that doesn't have a known problem! What 1.5 - 2 TB SATA drives are fast and run...

Filesystem for a Time Capsule by Justin[_9_]
No, not Apple Time Machine, but an actual time capsule. I have been asked to put together an external USB hard drive; format it and put a bunch of pictures, videos - you name it on there. It, along with other trinkets will be sealed in a container and buried. At first I was thinking ext4 since it...

Simulate eject of eSATA disk by disabling it? by Bert Hyman
Windows XP Pro SP3 My system doesn't have support for "hot swapping" eSATA, so there's no eject or "safely remove" option. Is disabling an eSATA disk a safe alternative? Will the OS and disk internal cache be flushed? -- Bert Hyman St. Paul, MN

Do SMART values decrease over time? by Yousuf Khan[_2_]
I've been noticing that one of my oldest IDE hard disks, which seemed like it was on its last legs just a couple of years back, seems to have come roaring back to life. Specifically, this drive had so many Spin Retry count errors that Disk Sentinel had given it just six months to live at one...

Hitachi stinks (literally) by larry moe 'n curly
Why did two Hitachi 7K1000.C hard drives stink during a 15-minute seek test (Hitachi's Feature Tool temperature test) but no other brands of 7200 RPM drives did during a similar seek test? All drives were tested outside the computer and still work fine (pass Drive Fitness Test, no clicking sounds...

Lacie F800 2tb Raid drive failure by Peter Kemp
I've had one of the drives in the RAID 5 setup fail on me. The drive is over three years old and Lacie won't give any advice for customers with out of warranty devices. The failed F800 drive uses a Maxtor DiamondMax 11 6H500R0 and Lacie doesn't sell that drive anymore and it looks like the...

Hard drive evolution could hit Microsoft XP users by Yousuf Khan[_2_]
BBC News - Hard drive evolution could hit Microsoft XP users "By early 2011 all hard drives will use an "advanced format" that changes how they go about saving the data people store on them. The move to the advanced format will make it easier for hard drive makers to produce bigger drives that...

flash drive problem by Joe[_23_]

be CAREFUL of that for which you wish [esp. for J G Miller] by Man-wai Chang
I finally got a fast connection to read this presentation. Yes, slide 4 mentioned Careful Read & Careful Write. I noticed that there were also Stable Read & Stable Write! But then, do all RAID storage chipsets do them? :) On 5/8/2010 21:25, J G Miller wrote: You do not need to do that, since...

Bare Drive vs. clothed? by JimR[_2_]
What is the difference between a bare drive vs. one that appears to be in consumer packaging? Is it just the packaging. For 5 bux difference, I can skip the glossy box. Thanks, JimR

best backup software with USB external hard drives? by Joe[_23_]
I looked at USB hard drives at Best Buy the other day- I plan on buying a 1 TB drive. The backup software all seems similar at least from what the boxes say. or would it be better to use third party software like Acronis? My PC has Vista- the backup software with that is extremely minimal. Joe
