NTFS allocation strangeness by
Tom Del Rosso[_5_]
This experiment was done under XP Pro on a small 10GB data partition with no
other activity going on. It was almost full with just 4 big files at the
time.
I created a txt file, zero bytes at first. Free space did not change, but
what is strange is that free space still didn't change when it...

USB external hdd scan disk utility....? by
randall shimizu
Looking for a utility to run disckscan USB external HDD. The WD
Lifegauard hdd
utility is the only one that I have found that works. The Lifeguard
does not
showed things were fine, but it did not show how many sectors were
bad..?
The win7 disk checker does not work either.

puzzled about files on disk by
sobriquet
Hi.
Something baffles me. Perhaps someone here can explain it.
If I go to the properties of my C drive on my laptop, the size
reported is smaller than the total size of the files and folders on
drive C:

always hide your backups! by
BW[_4_]
Some villains broke in through laundry window. House behind has been
vacant for 2 weeks, so
they wouldn't have been seen.
They grabbed my wife's laptop. She backs it up onto a 128GB thumb
drive, but that was lying on
table, so the scumbags took it too.
BTW they also took one of those Paywave...

With Seagate's driver, can you use a 3TB secondary data drive with a single

Current Seagate drives by
Percival P. Cassidy
The Barracuda XT drives (e.g., ST32000641AS) seem to have gone away.
What do people know about the current SATA drives? Do they incorporate
technology they acquired by buying Samsung's drive line?

Securedly erase memory cards? by
Ant[_3_]
Hello.
Will DBan work on these (e.g., very old SD mini and micro types from 16
MB to 2 GB sizes), or do I need to use a special memory card software
for them?
Thank you in advance. :)

Access openings in HDDs by
Tom Del Rosso[_5_]
Some HDDs have rather large (1cm) holes covered by plastic and foil
stickers. They seem to be positioned for easy access to destroying the
platters with a screwdriver or something. Is that what it's for?

Damaged sectors by
Cristiano[_2_]
After a scandisk scan under Win7 (Properties - Tools - Check now...)
of a 2 years old external ST3500418AS (power on: 350 hours), the SMART
shows 4079 "unstable sectors" (the scan took 3 days).
Can the box adapter cause that kind of problems? I mean no filter,
inadequate current, fluctuating...
