Any better way to wipe data from a HDD? by
Danny Jenkins
I was advised that in addition to fdisking and formating a hard disk
drive I should do the following, then fdisk and format again. Are the
following instructions a sure-fire way of erasing data?
Many thanks.

Bad sectors on new IDE drive by
Andre Majorel
I have a brand new IDE drive (250GB Maxtor) that has a sector
that consistently triggers a CRC error on read. I find this
puzzling, as I thought IDE disks were supposed to automatically
remap bad sectors. And always have in my past experience.
However, this is not the first time that I come across...

Some general questions about backup systems, mainly speed of restore by
Rob Nicholson
We have an LTO 100GB/200GB drive backing up a variety of data spread across
~5 servers. We also backup a few local directories on development PCs "just
in case". We're currently running an ancient copy of ArcServeIT 6.61 on NT4
for which the support contract ran out ages ago :-) The ArcServe host...

Best backup solution for Win98 Workstation by
Me
Hi all,
I have a customer who needs a backup solution ( most likely tape ) for a
Windows 98 Workstation..
The budget is fair and I would like to put something in that would have
some form of disaster recovery so that if the drive fails I can replace
it and restore the entire system to the last...

KM
Beginner to SAN here, apologies.
I'm looking into buying the new Dell entry level AX100 with 1.1TB of
storage space. It will be attached by fibre to a Dell PowerEdge
server.
What is the best backup solution for me out there? tape? dlt?
I'm on a tight budget and will be using Veritas.

Help with new SAN Install by

We've just installed a new FC SAN and I've just got a couple of questions
about some issues we're seeing.

Each host has a single HBA connected to a switch. The switch is fabric
enabled and both are interconnected.

Cheap / Homebrew NAS? by
Will Dormann
Has anybody here made a homebrew NAS unit?
I'm thinking something with a mini-ITX to keep the footprint and power
consumption low. With a stripped-down version of linux, it could
provide storage on the LAN via samba. RAID would be nice, but not a
necessity.
Or are there any commercially...

Rules of the Road for Fibre Channel Interop by
news.directlink.net
Being relatively new to fibre channel, I need to gain more awareness of what
works and what to expect. Maybe some gurus here on usenet can help. I
discovered that my Sun X6730A (FC100/S) card will not correctly communicate
with a Clariion FC5700 DPER. I don't understand why. Doesn't everyone...

Best data archival media? by
idunno
I was wondering if you gurus could share some impressions regarding
the best media type for data archival. In particular which media type
would you trust for archival of important data you wish to take
off-line 10 or 15 years. Would you suggest tape like DLT or some
optical disk or MO?
I'm...

remote management interface for NetApp Filers by
asdf
Hi All,
Anyone familiar with NetApp Filers? I'm trying to find out if
NetApp Filers support some sort of management software interface, such
as Microsoft's WMI (WEBM implementation) that would allow the management
of file system entities (from volumes down to the file level).
Thanks!

Has anyone managed to disable the hardware compression
on the Exabyte VXA-2 tape drive ? I just maxed out the
tape at 116 GB. I suspect that I might get better compression
from my Backup Exec software.
Thanks,
Lynn McGuire
