Hello.
The last few days, I noticed ata2 errors in my old Debian/Linux box's

Speeding up Windows with a SSD by
Daniel Prince
I am thinking of speeding up my Windows system with a SSD (Solid
State Drive). I have some questions about it.
How much would a SSD typically speed up a Windows system?
I currently use Windows XP Home. Would a SSD work better with
Windows 7?
What files are usually put on the SSD? What is...

eSATA cable by
cpliu
I bought a eSATA cable trying to take advantage of the extra speed
with the interface. I can't never get the external drive recognized.
Even if I took enclosure off and push the connection all the way. (It
is rather loose when connecting from external drive). I've tried it on
both a laptop and...

low-level HD formatting by
Timothy Daniels[_3_]
Is low-level re-formatting necessary to erase viruses from
a non-booting HD?
A neighbor has been re-building his system due to a viral
infection, and he has gone from a 70GB internal HD to a
500GB internal HD, and because he can't bring himself to
toss out the old infected 70GB HD, he wants to run...

Windows on C:, and apps on D:? by
Timothy Daniels[_3_]
In http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/749797.html,
the writer claims that if you put your Windows OS on the C:
partition and your apps on the D: partition, you can save
time in rebuilding your system if just the C: partition crashes
because the apps on the D: partition are...

Help with ext storage tower set up by
rock
Hi,
I bought this tidy little 4 HD Mini Tower Unit (Addonics) unit and
thought I'd try it with my Acer Aspire ONE ebook.
Didn't see any drives, I put in.
Used USB as there is no esata on ebook.
Then thought maybe the XP ebook does not work with the unit.

Macrium Reflect is THE tool for making backup copies of Windows XP by
John Doe
Long ago, when I first started using disk managers (probably
PartitionMagic) and shortly thereafter stumbled onto the practice
of copying the operating system, day by day it slowly and
pleasantly took a big load off of my shoulders. Maybe that
practice is just for enthusiasts. Whatever. If you...

Can high voltage from power supply damage harddrive? by
mm
I just talked to my friend who gave me the Dell computer, and he said
that his repair guy told him the reason his harddrive failed may
(likely?) have been a surge or something coming from the power supply.
Is this a cause of harddrive failure?
A common cause?
A conceivable cause but really a...

Silicon Image controller trouble by

Windows XP Home SP3 runs very, very sluggishly and reports I/O errors
with certain hard drives connected to a Silicon Image SiL3512 SATA PCI
controller card (two samples), but only when another HD is connected
to the motherboard's built-in controller. With both HDs connected to
the Silicon Image...

Windows based hard drive scan tool by

Looking for a Windows based hard drive scan utility. The one that comes

keeps banging away until successful then never reports the problem!
Looking for a program that reports a single error and not keep re-trying.
Currently...

Any way to revive a dropped 1.5TB Seagate drive? MUST GET IT TO SPINUP by

Hi,
Just as I was going to back up my 1.5TB drive to my other, identical
drive I dropped it while spinning. It was in a case and did not hit
hard yet it won't spin up any more. I MUST get the data off it. When I
plug it in it beeps (buzzes) periodically but does not spin up. There
are no dents or...

Question for Arno by
Ed Light
Hi, Arno.
I've been wondering this for a long time.
When a modern HD is copying a large file that's not fragmented, it goes
really fast. I imagine that on its own it would fill its little 16MB (or
more) buffer memory, jump over and writes it out, then goes back for
more. But is what's...

A simple batteryless anti-forgetting anti-lost alarm for USB sticks

Recycle bins and external USB flash drives... by

Hello.
Is it me or does Windows do not put deleted files, on USB flash drives,
into their recycle bins? I never noticed that behavior before until
tonight with a client's old Windows 2000 SP4 PC and my own old XP Pro.
SP3 PC. Do other OS' behave like this too like Windows 7, Mac OS X,
