do harddrives spin down in winXP standby? by
mm
I should know this by now, but do harddrives spin down when one goes
into winXP standby?
In my defense, I got confused in win98SE, when I thought they were
supposed to spin down if I went past the time limit set in the Power
part of the control panel (which isn't standby in the first place),
and...

Reliable external hard drives with ESata interface by
Edward Diener
I had previously bought two 1TB external hard drives a few years ago
from a company which, it appears, has since gone out of business called
Eagle Tech. Within a year one of the two hard drives died on me. I only
used the hard drives to back up data.
I am interested in buying another hard drive...

External USB2 2.5" Enclosure & 7,200rpm Drive? by
Justin[_11_]
Hi folks...
Would it be wise to put a 7,200rpm SATA drive in an external enclosure?
I intend to use a laptop drive so I don't have to mess around with an
extra power cable; and for portability. Possibly around 200GB formatted
to exFAT.
Would there be reliability, heat or power consumption issues?

How big is the ocean; how big is my drive? by
mm
Somehow I never get rid of all my problems and questions.
How do I know how big my flashdrive is?
Today I went to use my NIB flashdrive and it says there is no room to
copy AVG11 to it (to install on another computer *before* going on the
net.) PowerDesk shows my drive is only 1.07 gig big. I...

Chkdsk says it's a RAW drive! by
mm
The message said, roughly.
You have a RAW drive. Chkdsk will not work with a RAW drive.
This used to be a FAT32 drive that ran winME, and chkdsk used to work
on it. Wha' happened?
Can a HDD go bad just sitting around, like batteries do?

eSATA/USB ports by
Net Surfer
I want to figure out how eSATA/USB is used. Does the technology allow
me to plug in an eSATA drive without a power cord to the drive?
By comparison, Is it faster than an external USB 3.0 portable drive?
Which doesn't require extra power cable either.

SATA 6Gb/s and SAS 6Gb/s by
Net Surfer
I guess the standard says they are both at 6Gb/s. But are hard drives
with one technology faster than ones with the other technology in
reality?
Can I find online reviews on hard drives?

Can't clone restore HP Pavilion OS by
masonc
MY seven-year old HP Pavilion runs XP home edition from the HP disks.
It is updated to sp3.
I wish to replace an old drive with a new (and larger) one.
I Acronis clone the OS to an external drive, then clone it back to a
new and larger replacement disk.
I get "bad mbr". I tried a "fixmbr" but...

100% disk activity, but very little disk transfer by
Yousuf Khan[_2_]
I've often noticed that sometimes my boot hard disk goes crazy, disk
activity light flickers constantly, system becomes unresponsive, but
there's no particular process hogging the processor cores. I managed to
watch one such incident while Hard Disk Sentinel was present in memory,
and when I...

I have a 320gb Western Digital My Passport SE external hard drive, and I
can "see" it in Windows 7. When I go to Devices it shows the device
there, all drivers are installed and functioning properly (according to
Windows that is), yet when going in to My Computer it does not show the

What does G mean? by
mm
From the specs of a hard drive:
# Shock (1/2 sine pulse):
* Operating: 70 G
* Non-operating: 300 G
What does G stand for? Surely not "the force of gravity", as in,
During laundh astronauts are subjected to 10 G" or some number of
them.

I bought Samsung 1.5 GB HDD and put it to the enclosure with E-Sata/USB
interface. If connected by E-Sata the disc is recognized OK. If I use
USB connection, the HDD is not recognized. The problem was partially
solved with Disk Management- Import foreign disks. But every time I
disconnect Samsung I...

gotta rave about my new ssd. For anyone who's um'ing and ar'ing about
whether to go for an ssd I would say go for it. I've just fitted a new Intel
X-25 160Gb drive, bit pricey but the speed increase is noticeable. My win7
pc boots up and shuts down in less than half the time of a normal sata...

Can I clone an IDE drive to a SATA drive? by

Got the tivo drive working, thanks again. Loaded XPSP2;
seems to be working fine.
Time to clone the original IDE drive.
I routinely use Acronis 10 to backup IDE system
drives and restore to IDE drives with different
partition geometry.
When I tried to backup an IDE drive and restore
to a SATA...
