Dimension 4600 Pauses? by
Steve Urbach
Maybe someone has a clue to where I should look.
A Dimension 4600 (p4 2.4 GHz w 2G RAM) seems to pause (only the mouse motion
is responsive. No clicks accepted) for 15-30 seconds. No disk activity light.
If playing a MP3, there seems to be a small interruption (not the full time of
the...

How install software from DVD to ultrabook? by
Timothy Daniels[_4_]
Taking a look at my options since my XPS M1330 died,
I see these Dell ultrabooks:
http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/xps-13-l321x-mlk/pd
So how does one install software if the software comes
on a CD or DVD? Is there a way to transfer digitally managed
software (e.g. Windows, Visual Studio,...

A cool tool for nVidia graphics (Latitudes, XPS M-series and others) by
Ben Myers[_4_]
Our research dept (that's me) has turned up another cool tool. Truly cool. Truly-truly. It's the MSI AfterBurner, and it's from the same MSI that makes motherboards with exploding caps and graphics cards that die young.

It allows you to control...

Precision 390 Workstation Intel RAID with SSD? by
W[_3_]
I have a Precision 390 workstation using the Intel RAID for the SATA boot
device. Is it safe to use the Intel software RAID with SSD drives? I
have Windows XP installed.
If the RAID is constantly doing background testing and writing to the drive,
I assume that could create problems for an SSD,...

Add Ubuntu 13.04 to Windows 7 as a dual-boot by
Timothy Daniels[_4_]
I recently put 64-bit Ubuntu 13.04 and 64-bit Win7 Pro on my Dell M1330 laptop,
and adding Ubuntu 13.04 as a dual-boot to Windows 7 is easy. You don't need
3rd-party software, or an optical disk to hold the installation files, or a permanent
shared partition between the two OSes, or toss out...

Dell Zino HD 410 Video Fan Dead by
W[_3_]
On startup, a Dell Zino HD model 410 complains that the video fan is dead.
I downloaded the service manual, but no where in there do I see a schematic
of a video fan or instructions on how to replace this. I see a system fan
only.
Where is the video fan located?

install Dell OEM Win7 on M1330 laptop by
Timothy Daniels[_4_]
I've run into a snag activating Dell's OEM 64-bit Win7 Pro on my
Dell XPS M1330 laptop that came with 32-bit Vista installed. The
M1330 actually has a 64-bit architecture, so I've gotten 64-bit Win7
and 64-bit Ubuntu to install properly, but I can't activate the Win7.
The activation dialog just...

Dell and Windows 7 by
Ben Myers[_4_]
Dell catalog arrived in the mail yesterday. Lots of computers with Windows 7, a few with Windows 8 and touchscreens. Finally, Michael has stopped drinking the Microsoft Windows 8 kool-aid. Or maybe he looks at Lenovo's rising market share, as they have pushed Windows 7... Ben Myers

when to defrag? by
MZB
W7 Home. I turned off defrag scheduling as I prefer to do it when I
choose. Laptop is running reasonably speedy but when I do the analysis
it says 10% fragmented files.
Is there a rule of thumb. Should I defrag?
I use W7 Home

Dim 8400 by
Bob_Villa
I recently got a salvaged Dell for nix (knowing an IT person is very convenient) and added 3 Gigs of RAM, 320Gig HDD, and W7 32-bit. Runs very nicely. The only minor hassle was the audio driver.
The things I added were from a dead Gateway (bad M/B) that I got from a friend (I gave her an old Dell...

Corrupt text displayed by
John W. Wells
The text displayed on my monitor has begun to show this "colorful"
corruption:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8263/8663200237_a5bffa10a6_k_d.jpg
It has increased in size (of the areas covered) and frequency of
occurrance. It corrupts text in horizontal bands (the fullwidth of
the screen) and does...

Need advice on getting a wireless printer by

OK, I need some advice. I currently have an old Dell Dimension 2400
desktop in the basement. It is connected to a Linksys Cable Modem and
Linksys router. I have had a parallel printer (Epson Color Stylus 600)
connected to the desktop and it has been a horse. I have 4 laptops
upstairs. The two...

Win 8 after 3 months by
Steve W.[_4_]
Well I have been running this box for a while with Win-8.
So far my impressions are that it is a good OS for NEW computer users
who didn't start out with any earlier OS.
It will run most older programs as long as they don't require custom
hardware supporting them.
My ancient HP 970 prints just...

"OEM Partition" & Recovery partition on Dell Win7 PC by

I've been reading about the 100MB System Reserved Partition (SRP) that
the Win7 installation disk makes that contains the boot files. But on my
Dell Precision T3500 workstation that has Win7 Pro 64-bit pre-installed,
there is one 39MB mystery "OEM Partition" and a 750MB NTFS Recovery

Dell Perc 4/DC and Windows 7 by

Hello,
I've installed a Perc 4DC on a non dell workstation with windows 7. I have
no issues with the drivers (used the 2003 ones), but I'm not sure what kind
of disk management tool I could and should install.
By example, would Dell Array Manager am360a05 cause issues if installed on
windows 7...
