How to make an informed choice of SAN switch ports by
Nicholas Buckley
Hi everyone,
My main SAN is built around 2 x Brocade 48000 directors - 6 x 32-port cards
per chassis.
Whilst Brocade's documentation is very helpful on e.g. grouping connections
on ASICs to avoid traversing the backplane - and saving a whopping 1600
nanoseconds into the bargain :-) - it has...

disk error bursts by
Bill Todd
The frequency with which disk sectors become unreadable seems to have
remained relatively stable over the years, though one might hope that it
will decrease significantly with the expected move to 4 KB sectors (at
least if correction bits per sector increase somewhere nearly...

Addonics Storage Towers? Good/Bad? by
Gaiko
I have been looking everywhere for reasonably cheap (cost wise) esata/
usb, 4bay, RAID 1 storage solutions and while there are some
undisputedly top notch options out there they seem to start at $500 on
up and none seem to support 2tb internal drives.
I happened upon one post in the...

Raid5 vs Raid6 under degraded mode by
howa
Hey,
Assume a system with 9 SATA 1TB disks, and 1 hot spare.
They are targeted to config as Raid5 or Raid6.
If one of the disk failed, which system will perform better? Raid5 and
Raid6? By how many %?
Thanks.

SMD-E specification wanted by
Eric Smith
Does anyone have a copy of the SMD-E Interface Specification, which is
CDC/Imprimis/Seagate document 64712402? The spec for the earlier SMD
interface is on Bitsavers, but it doesn't look like the SMD-E spec is there.
Thanks!
Eric

SATA optical drive problems with DMA/PIO transfer by
[email protected]
Hi...I'm trying to setup on XP Home an LG Electronics SATA GH22NS30
DVD-writer on an older Intel D845PEBT2 motherboard (ICH4 core) with a
Silicon Image Si3112 SATA controller. It 'should' work but something
is wrong.
The drive reads both DVD and CD data disks, but a bit slow (8 MB/s). I
can't...

Problems with QLogic HBA API: HBA_STATUS_ERROR_MORE_DATA by
John Fenwick
Hello,
We are running into problems with our QLogic HBA API libraries. We get the
following error when trying to exercise it:
"HBA_STATUS_ERROR_MORE_DATA"
The QLogic API guide says this is returned when the allocated buffer is
insufficient.

Is anyone in the group using or maybe just aware of an open source
storage reporting tool that could produce reports for specific arrays
like those sold by EMC and NetApp? I'm looking for an open source tool

Raid suggestions? by

Hello,
We have just bought Dell MD1000, together with 15 SAS 15K hard disks.
This server will be connected to 6 web servers which provide a
centralized storage using NFS.
This server is important as if it down, other web servers didn't work
so I need to consider if which Raid configuration is...

Out-of-order writing by disk drives by
Bill Todd
That disks write data out of order when write-back caching is enabled
does not seem at all surprising, since that's one of the main potential
benefits of having write-back caching enabled. I'd be far more
concerned if you had found that disks ever wrote data out of order with
write-back...
