Dell going private by Hachiroku ハチロク
Mike Dell and other principals are looking to take Dell private again. I am hoping they are making this move to get away from shareholders who want a return on their investments and get back to making GOOD computers again. Don't get me wrong, Dell is still a decent computer, just not as good...

Inspiron 14R again by Ben Myers[_4_]
I'm now working on my second 14R, aka N4010, tearing it down to reconnect the wifi card and touchpad for the guy who thought he could do it all himself after replacing the hard drive with an SSD. Now it hits home where I have seen this stupid design before! It's almost the same as the lamentable...

Dell XPS9000 won't start by Richard S
I have a Dell XPS9000, bought in March 2010 and running Win 7 Pro64, that has had intermittent problems getting through the POST and bootup process for about 18 months. (Unpluggiing the power cable for about 30 seconds sometimes seemed to help it get to the POST.) Until today, it has always...

I have a Dell 9200. I now use Acronis 13 for backups. When I run Acronis, it lists the partitions. The list includes my drive C, a drive D which is identified as Recovery and another .1 gig sized partion called Unnamed Partition- which is identified as a FAT16 type. I don't know if that is...

Dell Inspiron 1545 by [email protected]
Is it possible to change Video Shared memory in BIOS on this model? I checked all options and I'm afraid that it's not impossible but maybe you know something about that.

(XP) laptop monitor staying on, fix by Ron Hardin
If the monitor won't time out and turn off, one trick to preserve the flourescent lamp (if it's not a led-backlit screen) is set the power options to do nothing if the laptop is closed, and then (almost) close the laptop. Bingo, the screen goes dark. Almost closing it (watch for the screen to...

CPUs upgrade "Westmere" -vs- "Westmere-EP" by No Name
I am considering upgrading my Precision T7500 CPUs. I currently have dual quad core Xeon E5620. Looking at New Egg, the 5600 series has two different descriptions "Westmere" and "Westmere-EP". A quick google search on the difference did not explain it to me. Would either work in my machine? ...

Optiplex GX520 and dual core? by Ben Myers[_4_]
According to the specs for the Optiplex GX520, it has a 945 chipset, which is capable of handling an Intel dual-core CPU. But the specs also say that the GX520 does not accept a dual-core. Anybody done it? BIOS limitation? The GX520 and GX620 are almost identical. Thanks... Ben Myers
