``The cpu is a group of operators; unless they're coordinated,
nonsense happens; the coordination is based in the cpu internal
clock.''
In non-technical language, does this sound true?
I'm looking for a bit more information on how the implementation takes
place; who sends signals to who; maybe...

A basic fan connector question by
Wes Harrison
I searched for a more appropriate newsgroup for this question but couldn't
find any so I hope it is appropriate for this forum. Please suggest an
alternative if it isn't.
I am building my first Intel-based PC and am having a spot of bother with

a couple of P-4 questions by
i'm_tired
First, hyperthreading. I recently read in a PC mag and on a laptop makers
website that Hyperthreading only works for WindowsXP. I somehow doubt the
truth of that. Isn't Windows2000 able to handle hyperthreading? (and are
there not some flavors of linux/unix able to as well?)
And, I'm wondering...

A different D865PERL problem by

Wow - someone still has this board! Great! Let me try this one...
The on board sound function has failed - kinda
I can use the "SoundMax" software to configure a "4 way stereo"
speaker system and then the "rear pair" of speakers will provide
sound. My DVD player software will now provide audio...

A good reason not to choose AMD? by
Peter B. P.[_2_]
http://youtube.com/watch?v=XgOmMAasqto&mode=related&search=
Old CPU's, granted, but it appears that Intel CPU's simply handle
critical overheating much better than AMDs.
Your thoughts?

A little more detail about Prescott performance by
Yousuf Khan
Ace's Hardware has come up with a bit more detail about what's going to
happen in the Prescott. The L1 D-cache has been doubled to 16K. L2 doubled
to 1MB. Now there's a dedicated integer multiplier for IMUL latency
improvements. SSE3, of course. Larger WC buffers for bursting data to an AGP
video...

A new breeze blowing by
Bill Davidsen
Intel has some investment in getting this new CPU cooler on the market,
so I guess this is on-topic in this group. Actually interesting, I have
to wonder if case cooling fans could also be made with no moving parts
to fail.

A question about IA-32 TLB by
Chuck Song
It's said that IA-32 uses the TLB to translate linear address to
physical address. Who can tell me when a TLB misses, where should
the hardware state machine to find the page directory and page tables,
in the level 1 data cache or access the main memory directly ?
Can you tell me which document has...

A question about optimization by
David C.
I've got a small fragment of code I need to optimize. It adds an
integer to another integer, modulo a third integer.
In C, this operation is:
int i, j, k, l;
i = (j + k) % l;
I know that in the past integer division was a very expensive operation,

A thin-client theory I don't believe by

But I'm posting it, anyway, because throwing Citrix in there makes it
just marginally credible. The thin-client future--the one that *is*

A64 mobos for $80 by
Yousuf Khan
754-pin Athlon 64 mobos can be had for as little as $80. Based on SiS 755
chipset. This chipset seems to a little pocket rocket, apparently better at
i/o than its rivals. Combine with a $200 A64 3000+, and things are getting
affordable. One of first SIS based mobos is the ECS-755. These SIS...

About CPUID, why is it serialization instruction? by
Revan76
Hello everyone!
I wondered why cpuid was serialization instruction like RSM and many
other.
Indeed, I don't understand why it requires previouses instruction to
be completed.
Thank you :)
