Am considering a Handbook 486 - Can it run Linux & Firefox? by
[email protected]
Greetings.
I am new to Handbooks and Linux, but am attracted to this machine
because it seems to be quite an engineering marvel for its time. I
understand that a 486 operating at 40Mhz and 20MB of RAM isn't much,
but I understand that Linux has a reputation for being able to 'push'
older hardware...

AMD K6 400, WinXP and Lexmark USB Printer by
Mick
I installed XP on my friends old AMD K6 400 (256MB of RAM) and was surprised
it worked although slowly. My friends were happy with it apart from there
being a problem with their new Lexmark USB printer (not sure of the model,
but it talks to you whilst printing). The printer keeps locking up...

Anatomy of a Dell Service Call by
Albertv
Spread this far and wide. What the world would look like without Gateway
tech support.
This by no means is an isolated case. Since the demise of Compaq and the
preceived (premature) death of Gateway, we welcome you to a near
monopoly...

Ancient 75mhz laptop with 8MB of RAM Win3.1 by
Mick
A friend has given me a little project to do for him (if possible) and that
is to install Win95 and put Word plus Excel on this antique. I have a copy
of Win95 from Gateway that has never been used but I cannot get the CD Drive
to work on the laptop (floppy works). The Neon light comes on and it...

Another Memory Question by
JE
Simply, how do you determine whether a chip is high or low density? Seems
no two chips have the same exact information attached to them and it is
really confusing do those of us who are already confused!!
Thanks,
Jack

I have a USB Dacal Disk Library - you know, a mechanical doodad where you
put a disk in a slot and add
the name of the disk to a database. The diskholder connects to the computer
via a USB cable, you
then find the disk you want be searching the software database and the unit
finds it. Good idea if...

Any Chance of Gateway using AMD64 Chips? by
Joel Richman
There was talk last August of Gateway introducing PC's with AMD64
chips when they were rolled out. Obviously that didn't happen.
Now that the AMD chips are a proven success, I'm wondering if you
people thought there was any chance of Gateway using them in the near
future.
Do you guys see a next...

Any Computer Support in the US? by
[email protected]
I would like to buy a new computer. However, if possible, I would
like to buy from a company that still has their customer service in
the US. Do any companies have this anymore? Just got off being
online with Gateway and they said they were in the process of moving
their CS back to US. I think...

Any Experts got any tips or ideas for me? by
Lee Bray
Hi
Previously I posted about losing the my screen resolution going from
1024 x 768 pixels to 640 x 480 pixels quite often. It was suggested that
the CMOS battery might be bad, but am still losing it after replacing the
battery, the resolution will change even when just restarting the computer.
I...

Any options for a Profile 700 XL? by
Jim Leonard
Hi, I'm the "proud" owner of a "GATEWAY PROFILE 700 XL FOR BUSINESS"
(as it says on my invoice). It's a Pentium III 700MHz Profile, with
192MB of RAM and a 20GB disk (the best I could order in 2000). My
problem is, you guessed it, it needs service. Here is what happens:
- Plug the power brick...
