Overclocking an AMD XP 2500+ CPU by
AN O'Nymous
Just a moment ago, I tried overclocking my AMD XP 2500+ Barton CPU to
3200+ by changing the FSB from (166x11) to (200x11). I didn't change
anything else.
I have DDR400 RAM and the BIOS settings is on optimal, which means it
auto-adjusts the RAM to DDR333 for (166x11) and DDR400 for...

O/T: christma.exe Flash e-card - OK or a Trojan? by
AN O'Nymous
I received an email from a friend today with a "christma.exe"
executable inside a zip file. Alarm bells started ringing, but seeing
how it was a trusted friend I thought it should be OK.
Anyway, after scanning the file with my Grisoft Free antivirus, I
double clicked on it and it seemed a harmless...

Seagate HD 5 year warranty? by
AN O'Nymous
Dave wrote:
I just saw Seagate hard drives at Comp USA for some great prices and
noticed that Seagate offers a five year warranty as compared to
Western Digital's and Maxtor's one year.
Are Seagate drives really more reliable than WD and Maxtor?
The proof is in the pudding.
My Maxtor...

Onboard vs. standalone ethernet controllers? by
AN O'Nymous
Are there any benefits of getting a separate NIC if your motherboard
already has an onboard ethernet controller?
I bought a new NIC although I have an onboard one as a program I use
needs a MAC address for licensing purposes. I would rather the software
be tied to an (easily transferable) network...

Prices of building your own PC vs. retail ones by
AN O'Nymous
Does anyone have any comparisons of the price difference between
building & assembling your own PC vs buying it from a retailer like
Dell?
I've always been told it is cheaper to build it yourself, but what
price savings are we looking at?
I find it hard to compare prices because the information...

Most cost effective system for Beowulfing? by
AN O'Nymous
Hi guys. Can anyone recommend an optimal system in terms of bang for
the buck, for using as a Beowulf node? Current links/citations in this
regard would be much appreciated.
The tasks on the system wouldn't take more than 512MB of RAM, will be
fine with onboard graphics, but it would require as...

Secure back up options? by
AN O'Nymous
I've got some large files I would like to back up, approximately 50GB
every month. The data is important but not critical. It took a lot of
time to compute them. For example, I can live with a few MB of
corrupted data - I just need to re-run the computations again.
What is the best way for me to...

Benefits of many HD partitions? by
AN O'Nymous
Are there any benefits of many HD partitions?
On one hand, the last couple of GB on a hard disk tends to be unused,
so having 10 40GB partitions would mean these last corners are wasted.
Of course this is a soft restriction as you can fill the partitions in
their entirety if you pick your file...

Building a PVR: Connection to coaxial Jack by

Hi,
I'm trying to build a PVR machine that I can watch/record TV with. I was
thinking of using the Hauppauge PVR 150/250/350 card for a tv tuner.
However, the tv-out ports in those and similar cards seems to be either of
the composite type or S-Video type. Unfortunately, my TV only has a 75...

Suggestions for a good systems for graphics? by

Does anybody have suggestions for hardware on my new computer?
I'm working a lot with Photoshop, Quark and other image/DTP related apps, so
a lot of RAM and a good graphics card is essential. But I haven't kept
up-to-date with hardware for a few years, so I'm not sure what to get.

Intel hyperthreading by
Andersen
Hi,
I am thinking about buying a new computer.
Is it worth it to pay extra to get an intel with hyper-threading?
Hyper-threading shares the caches, will it not then by also more or less
suitable to get one with 512kb cache?
Some of them say FSB 800MHz, what is that? Is that worth getting?
