USB or parallel port, which should the printer use? by
*Vanguard*
My printer is an HP DeskJet 970Cse. HP's article at
http://snurl.com/36mv notes the ideal bandwidth of the various
connection types used for printers which a serial at 53 Kbps,
parallel at 360 Kbps, USB at 12 Mbps (for v1.1, xxx for v2.2), Ethernet
at 10 Mbps (although it could be 10/100/1000...

Got a bad USB port. How to fix? by
*Vanguard*
This is for an old box using the AOpen AX6BC motherboard with a Pentium3
800MHz. There's one card slot left but I'll need that later for a SCSI
card. I have 2 printers so one is connected to the parallel port and the
other to one of the two USB ports on the backpanel. That left me with one
USB...

Wireless mouse cursors "balk" or "stall" by
+++Bobby \O\+++
I have two Logitech mice connected to USB ports on my PC. When I move a
mouse, the cursor stalls or "balks" - then keeps moving. This happens very
frequently. Any ideas what's causing this to happen?

which of these upgrades would give me the best perforamce boost? by
+c0re-
Bit of a n00b question which I apologise in advance for!
My system will soon be as follows:
p4 3 Ghz, 1gb ddr400 ram, geforce 6800 GT, 865 chipset board, ata-100 hard
drive.
At the moment I can either also upgrade the board, or the hard drives but
not really both. My question is, what would be...

Looking for someone to clear up this prescott confusion! by
+c0re-
I'm in the market for a new cpu to replace my northwood p4 2.4c.
The main one I'm looking at is a prescott 3.0E, 800FSB.
however... I've seen a lot of confusing and conflicting stuff such as: The
earlier prescotts run very hot, but the later ones, D0 stepping run cooler -
is this true?
Prescotts...

First overclocking attempts by
-
I've just tried overclocking (AMD Athlon T-Bred 1800+ XP CPU) for the first
time. Mobo: ASRock K7VT2.
I've tried overclocking to 134 and 135 FSB speeds. At 134, the machine works
perfectly fine, at 135, the machine doesn't boot to the POST. I reckon its
my PSU (Q-Tec 400w Gold Dual fan, which I've...

DMA / PIO Mode problem by
-
I have 2 HDs connected to a single IDE channel. The master HD (OS) is
running in Ultra DMA mode. The second is running in PIO mode despite having
selected the windows option to run the drive in DMA mode if possible.
My problem is that I believe that both drives should be able to run in DMA
mode -...

USB leads by

I'm trying to reuse a USB port I've been given. The wires are orange, brown,
red and black - everywhere I've looked on google for info on USB wire
colours I see white, red, black and green wire configurations.
Is there anyone here who can tell me which of these colours correspond to
which power...

AGP bus (PCI mode) by
-
I've noticed that on this Nvidia TNT AGP card on the properties page for the
device it claims to be using the AGP bus with "(PCI mode)" in brackets next
to it. Does this mean that its running on the AGP bus or not?!
Also - out of interest if this (32MB) card is running in PCI mode (and
therefore...

Power supply heat problem? by

My friends' PC has MBM5 installed and the power supply thermometer is
showing peaks of 70-76C from time to time lasting for around a minute, which
is classed as a warning in the program. Is this really "dangerous" or just
problematic in the short / medium / long term ie being symptomatic of...

IDE "speed" question by

I know that PCI / AGP / USB interfaces have different speeds or rather data
transfer rates. I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what this rate is for
the IDE interface because I'm considering getting a PCI IDE card (to add
more than 2 HDs) and I'm wondering if the fact that the card is PCI...

Thermal paste by

Does using thermal paste on the CPU really make a great deal of difference
in conducting heat to be dissapated? What sort of temperature differences
are we talking about between using an average thermal paste and a CPU using
no paste whatsoever?

If the monitor is switched off and there is no screensaver working, am I
correct in thinking that the graphics card is still generating roughly the

monitor, and therefore subjecting it to gradual damage in the same sense
that a...

my computer seems to be making a ticking noise - very regular, maybe 1 tick
per second or slightly quicker. I'm not sure whether its one of the
hardrives. Its _not_ a click, like when a HD goes down, I've heard that and
that is definitely a clicking or a crunch, but this is definitely a tick...

Recovering data from damaged disk by

You could try hooking it up to a linux system - I've found linux is far more
flexible / has lots more utilities than windows when it comes to file system
troubles. See if you can make it a slave to a linux master and see where you
go from there. if you haven't got access to a linux system but have...
