Extension speakers by
JimL[_3_]
XP Pro SP3, Thinkpad T42. A pair of LabTec LCS 150 extension speakers.
I was getting total dropouts of sound while watching a video. At first I
thought it was a bad internet connection, but I discovered that by cutting
the volume below half, barely enough to listen to something, the...

Hihi.
Recently I bought a new computer. Intel Quad core :D
Anyways When I finally tried to set it up (three days later _),
nothing would show up on the monitor screen. Trying to figure out what
was wrong, I put the monitor cable into the old computer. Turns out the

RAID... nForce4 or Windows 2K3? by
Calab
Running a file server on a DFI mainboard with an nForce 4 chipset. I have
three 1TB SATA drives that I am putting into a RAID5 array.
Should I utilize the RAID offerred by the nForce chipset, or should I just
run the drives as normal SATA and let Windows 2003 handle the RAID
functions?

nVidia Quadro 2 Pro on a Mac by
gjsmo
I just got an nVidia Quadro 2 Pro for a PC. I want it to work in my
Power Mac G4, but I'm not quite sure where to begin. I know I probably
just need to re-flash my EEPROM with something more Mac-appropriate,
but I can't seem to figure out how to do that on this card. FYI, it's
just a re-branded...

DSL Connection Problem by
v
Hi Experts,
I have an 18 month old box self-assembled (Box 1) with Win2K SP4 and one
that goes back at least 10 years - Box 2, also self-assembled. DSL was
running on both (one at a time, of course) for over 2 years.
Box 2 has had no problem at all with DSL.
After about a year, after Box 1...

routers and firewalls by
JimL[_2_]
I've read that hardware firewalls are found in routers and that they are in
some ways better than software firewalls. I really have no need for a
router, per se, but I wouldn't mind replacing ZoneAlarm if it is the thing
to do.
But I've also read that software and hardware firewalls have...

Hitachi hts424030m9at00 by
Deodiaus[_2_]
Well, I ran a SMART scan from BIOS, but it came up ok
I ran the advanced scan on Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test, which
indicated that there are problems with the HD.
DFT recommends wiping the entire disk. I would, but need to get WinXP
CD from Dell, so as to reinstall the OS.

Share External Drive? by
[email protected]
I have an external drive set up as shared and modifiable on one
computer and want to access it from a LAN'ed second computer via
Network Places. XP tells me it cannot do it - says i don't have
permissions.
Since I can do the same for an internal hard drive, which means my
networking should be...

I'm confused on my USB's by
[email protected]
I have a machine with a MACHSPEED K8M8MSR2-VC motherboard with four
USB ports on its rear plus two headers with two USB ports each, one of
which isn't connected, the other is. ***The one that is connected is
stated to be USB2 in the MACHSPEED manual. That gives me a total of 6
USB ports.
I have...

Making Externally connected devices HD and OD bootable by
Roy[_5_]
Is it possible to make these devices connected by USB Bootable?
What I mean is its normal that if you boot from a CD you have to use
the internal optical drive; the same also with the O/S, it must be
booted from the internally installed harddrive.
Is there a turn around for this?
TIA

floppy drive does not appear in XP device manager by
who?
So .. I connected the IDE floppy drive's data and power cables and booted
up. Unfortunately the drive did not appear in device manager, or,of course,
not in My computer either.
This old floppy drive has something like 6 jumper setting, damned if I know
which should be set. It is set now as it...

USB cable question by
UCLAN[_2_]
I have a cordless mouse whose receiver plugs into a USB port in the back
of my mini-tower computer. Except when the batteries are new, I get
intermittent communication between the mouse and the receiver. I wish
to add a simple 3-foot extension cable to bring the receiver closer to
my mouse...

Use of a KVM Switch? by
[email protected]
I want to connect an external 1TB USB hard drive to a KVM in order
that 2 machines can access that hard drive. Otherwise I have to
manually move the USB connector from machine to machine. I also would
like to connect a USB printer similarly instead of sharing it via XP.
Is this possible? Or am...

Where can I get this info? by

I've been Googling myself silly and can't find the answer to a relatively
simple question. At least I'm pretty sure it's an easy question for
SOMEBODY!
I've looked to find out how you sell electricity back into the grid.
Hundreds of web pages will tell you something like, "Well you fill out...

what ways does the T60 outshine it on a practical basis?
Thanks

Sound card impedance by
SA[_2_]
A vendor setting up a system for us asked a question that I don't know the
answer to.
Does anyone know the impedance on the output (speaker or headset) jack of
most pc audio cards? We use mostly Dell Optiplex's with I believe Soundmax
cards in them. I know very little about audio. Is the...

Wireless routers? by
JimL[_2_]
Is there a lot of difference in the effectiveness of wireless routers?
My only obvious use for wireless would be either to use the laptop out on
the deck or upstairs while in bed. Would a wireless router be likely to be
marginal in such "through the wall" or "through the floor" situations...
