Chipsets compatible with Core 2 Duos? by
Yousuf Khan
I was out trying to price some components for an upgrade of my desktop
system (Athlon XP 1900+ system with AGP) to something with a PCIe
connector. Of course that now means I'll have to swap out the processor,
RAM and motherboard too. I am open to an Intel Core 2 Duo, it would
probably be my...

High-tech vs. cheap-tech by

An interesting viewpoint from an analyst firm about why HP is doing
well, Dell is not; and why AMD is doing well, but Intel is not. It was

CPU Efficiency by
Tim
If a 3GHz P4 draws 90 watts from the power supply, what percentage of that
90 watts is actually used for processing data and not winding up in the form
of heat? Theoretically, if a CPU were superconducting it would have 100%
efficiency, dissipating no heat. But I'm guessing that a 3GHz P4 uses...

Which would be faster? by
Karl Shaw
Hi all,
Soon to be getting a new laptop, and I have two options on the Processor:
The first is a Pentium 4 with HT Tech. @ 3.2GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB
The second is a Pentium M @ 1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 400MHz FSB
The rest of the two systems are almost identical:

EM64T bug by
Yousuf Khan
Looks like Intel decided to reduce the maximum addressable physical memory
on Nocona from 40 bits to 36 bits. But it looks like somebody forgot to tell
the guy in charge of setting up the CPUID instruction, because Nocona still
returns 40 bits when queried. This is apparently what's preventing...

Now AMD follows Intel's lead by
Black Jack
AMD may begin adopting Intel's model numbering scheme for its own
Athlon 64's. Strange, AMD adopts model numbers and then Intel follows,
and then AMD retweaks to fit Intel. Well, so much for the PR-rating
system being an indicator of relative performance from an Athlon
Thunderbird....

Moore's Law, as chip manufacturers generally refer to it today, is
coming to an end, according to a recent research paper.
Granted, that end likely won't come for about two decades, but Intel

Is it dumb to buy 32 bit cpu now? by
Jethro
Is it unwise for me to bjuy a 3.4 Pentium 4 with Windows 64 XP coming
out at the end of the year? Will it be obsolete within a year? Should
I just buy 64 bit chips from now on? TIA!

How does the Skylake fix work? by
Mr Macaw
Just out of interest, how does a hardware bug in a CPU get fixed by a software BIOS update? Isn't the bug a physical misconnection in the circuits?

Basic benchmarking by
Steve
Hi,
What benchmarking utilities would give me a good overview of my computers
performance level and alert me to sub-par operation for the given hardware
configuration?
My system is as follows:
Pentium 4 Processor at 2.8GHz with 800MHz front side bus
1 GB DDR 400MHz SDRAM (2 DIMMs)
