Centera/Snaplock file retrieval speeds by
Gareth Williams
Can anyone give me first-hand advice on typical response-times when
retrieving documents from NetApp Snaplock and EMC Centera devices?
I'm looking at a scenario where ~20,000 images a day need to be accessed
and rapid retrieval times are a user requirement. Typical file size is
100K and bandwidth...

How to talk to Fiber Channel drives in an array on Win NT by
Matthias
Hi all,
guess, I could need a little help .......
I want to test a FC controller board and a FC drive I just bought.
The controller is an older HP D6977A. The drive is a Seagate 9,1 GB.
Since I have a SUN Enterprise FC storage array (A5000), I thought, I
could talk to this device pretty easily.

Bad disk IO performance problem during reads and writes by
Beeblebrox
I'm using V480s with A1000s as storage using Veritas DB edition,
solaris 8 running oracle.
We're seeing poor IO performance and I'm having trouble pinpointing
the problem. IO looks fine when it's mostly writes, but tanks the
moment reads increase:

StorageWorks SWXRC-05: need help with console terminal pinouts by
Greg A. Woods
Hi folks!
I just acquired a used StorageWorks 410(?) RAID array for my home
network. It's got an SWXRC-05 controller card in it.
The card has a six-pin/six-cond RJ-12 jack for its console terminal.
Unfortunately I didn't get the console adapter cable with it.
Does anyone have the pinouts for...

SAN security questions by
Madz
Hi,
I am new to the topic of SANs and would like to learn more about the
same, especially from the security perspective. Considering that SANs allow
for stogare from heterogenous environments, i.e. storage managed in native
Windows format of NTFS while clients vary from Windows to UNIX and...

Remnants of disk data? by
Paul Allen Panks
Just had a dream about retrieving data already overwritten. I have no
scientific background whatsoever, but wrote down these words in my
journal:
"In analyzing the structure present on the surface, it is abundantly
clear that remnants of data -- however small -- still exist beneath
the surface of...

Identical disks showing different DMA modes under Windows XP -- why? by
Spammay Blockay
I just installed a Hitachi Travelstar 7k60 as my secondary drive
in my Thinkpad laptop, to go with the same model drive as my primary drive.
I looked at the device properties for the new drive, and it was showing
DMA Mode 2, whereas the primary drive was showing DMA Mode 5.
These values are...

Newbie Switch Zoning Question by
JT Johnson
We are implementing an EVault disk-to-disk backup system and I had a
question about zoning.
Most of our servers have only one HBA, they're not critical systems.
We have a NetApp R200 SATA system that will be used only for backups.
Can I zone my McData 4500's to the R200 as well as my primary SAN...

XP setting laptop drive to UDMA-2, should be UDMA-5 -- ideas? by
Spammay Blockay
I put a new drive (Hitachi 7K60) in my Thinkpad A31's Ultrabay,
and noticed that Windows XP has set it to Ultra DMA Mode 2, whereas
the same model drive, in the main drive, is set to UDMA Mode 5.
Does anyone know how I can force XP to use UDMA Mode 5 on the second
drive? Or is there something...

I've been a SAN and NAS administrator for some time now, but, as some

Is a "Raid 1" mirrored disk readable on any IDE machine ? by
Toto
I hope my question makes sense (I'm not sure...). I mean, let's suppose
I've got a disk failure on a Raid 1 array of 2 IDE disks, and for any
reason the Raid controler is out. Can I just take the remaining working
drive, and read its data on any normal IDE machine ? Or is it absolutely
necessary to...

Anyone know whether the Sun StorEdge L25 (or the Quantum M1500) tape library
supports some form of user security, like a password or PIN to be entered,
before the operator can be allowed to unlock the tape mags? I couldn't find
anything in the docs, only a mention about a service key required for...
