reserved spares on DVD-RAM by Eric Gisin
I was looking at DVD-RAM properties in ImgBurn (Windows), and noticed there is ~120MB reserved space, which are spares. SCSI MMC-2 shows a spare area in each of 24 zones. SCSI MMC-4 has information in section 6.27.2.11 on primary and supplementary spares. I found more useful info he...

Mike Richter-has he died? Haven't heard from him in ages by Dennman6[_2_]
Just wondering, amongst all the spam now here, if Mike Richter is still with us. His website seems to have been taken down, and I can't seem to Google any new info on him. He was(is?) quite a knowledgeable fellow in matters of the CDR area, and I'd always wanted to get his "Sons of Empire" CD-ROM...

LG GCC-4243N reads CDs but won't read DVDs anymore by CPeterson3
Hi, I just replaced my hard drive on my Dell 600m, so I had to reinstall Windows XP SP2 and all my drivers, etc. Everything seemed to go OK, BUT the CD/DVD drive (HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4243N) in my 600m will no longer read DVDs of any kind, not data and not movies. It used to read DVDs before with...

CDs recently not recognized in home stereo by John Keiser
I've burned many a audio CD using a Liteon 24X10X40 and they've consistently worked in my old Technics home stereo CD player. Recently, a freshly minted CD would play on my portable CD players but not the Technics unit. This happened again today. I'm using TDK media rated for 24X but burning at...

Ejecting DVD+RW while background formatting in progress by Chan WK
I was burning some video to DVD+RW using Pinnacle Studio 8.0. Towards the end of the process, Studio indicates that "background formatting" is in progress, but the LED on my Pioneer A06 is not even on. Nothing seems to be happening and this goes on for quite a while (something like 10 minutes)....

Burining multiple copies of the same file. by Boxington Headmaker
I'm sure I've seen a program that will scan a set of files, and create an ISO image with any duplicate files removed. For example, say I've got 3 identical copies of "large_file.bin" on my CD, rather than writing that file 3 times, it will write it once, and point the 3 'FAT' entries at the same...

UDF Writer software that works with CD-R or DVD-R by Mike Schumann
Does anyone know which UDF writer software will work with CD-R or DVD-R media. All of the software I have found (InCD, FileCD) appear to only support RW media. Thanks, -- Mike Schumann

Is Buffer Underrun Protection good? by Harry Muscle
If Buffer Underrun Protection kicks in, does it do anything to the data on the CD? Or does the CD (or DVD for that matter) come out exactly as if the Protection never kicked in? For example if you're copying a protected game CD to make a backup of it (since I don't want to loose the CD to...
