DDR ram speed by
Bill Cunningham[_2_]
I have DDR in my computer. How can you tell it's speed? I have two 512 M
DDRs and bought a new 1 G DDR. I was told my the retailer that different
brands and speeds sometime sdon't always go together well.

SSD partition alignment revisited by
Norm X[_2_]
Hi All,
I have a trim tool on my netbook. There are two SSD drives, 64GB xSD and an
internal 32GB PATA SuperTalent SSD. Trim of the 64GB drive gives no
complaints and reports, 16 MB partition offset. That is to say, 16MB at the
beginning of drive is free. Trim would complain about bad alignment...

Usenet-Next - A proposal to create a very strict NNTP network with nospam by
Tristan B. Kildaire (Deavmi)
So, I was not born in the Usenet era and honestly would have like to had
what they had - a standard protocol for communication. This exists today
but guess what has happened to it, SPAM, SPAM and more SPAM.
I want an NNTP network and I know many others do as well, I surely
cannot be alone in a...

A MOBO upgrade for my Acer M1640 by
Norm X[_2_]
Hello all,
The MCP73VE MOBO in my Acer M1640 has never failed. That is the value of
maintenance. Maybe it is obsolete. I should look for an ATX MOBO that allows
me to keep my goodies, Q6600 CPU, nVidia GTX 950, 240GB Kingston SSD, etc.
Maybe Win10 installed on the SSD would boot on the new...

How to enable a healthy RAID storage array on Win10? by
Norm X[_2_]
Hello fellow enthusiasts,
I finally did the work of moving a 'system reserved' partition from a Win10
HDD to my 240GB SSD, in front of the Win10 C:\ partition, and now, with the
help of EasyBCD, I was able to boot SSD and remove the original install HDD.
By today's standards a 240 GB SSD is...

MSI FM2-A85XA MOBO Question by
[email protected]
I messed up the boot process BIOS settings on my MSI FM2-A85XA-G43
mobo. Dumb me.
That said - I now cannot display and then select from the boot
selections for my multi-boot machine - two hard drives - each with
its OS. It was working, so I know the hard drives are ok.
There must b e a BIOS...

Hard Drive Problem Parameter is Incorrect by
[email protected]
This makee no sense.
I have W10 on a 160GB C: internal hard drive and my data on a D:
320GB internal hard drive. Both are set up as shared with my other W7
PC and vice versa. The networking workks partially, from W10 PC to W7
PC, but not in reverse. One day I will find out why.
Meanwhile -...

hardware, UEFI, dual-boot, USBstik ? by
[email protected]
I'm suffering brutal punishment from the WinTel monopolists since my
PC was stolen, and I was forced to buy a Win8.1 x64 to match my ISP.
It's written that the new EUFI has "solved the security problem of a
USBstik being able to boot an independant
OS, and therby get access to all files".
If...

Brother HL 2270DW Problem by
[email protected][_2_]
I have had this Brother HL 2270DW printer for years now.
It can be connected via USB or CAT5 (wired or wireless).
I really thought I had it connected via CAT5 (to my router).
Anyway, it has been printing just fine from my W7 PC.
I have just created W10 on a second PC, and tried to install...

can't connect connector, USB to 2.5 by
micky
A friend wanted to recover files from an old 2 1/2" HDD so I went over
with my USB to SATA/IDE gizmo. I'd used another version of this for 3
1/2" drives, and a 2 1/2 IDE drive, but I had looked at this one and it
has a little SATA connector on it.
The power connector fit, but when it was...

Wretched Excess by

Have you ever made one of those impulse purchases and then wondered what
you could have been thinking about immediately after? This time I bought
16gB of DDR4 for no other reason than that the price seemed good and the
parts matched what was already in the machine. In this case the machine is
a...

AMD64 ? ia64 by
[email protected]
This Win8.1 thing shows: "x64-based processor.... Intel."
Some software that I want to install reads:
If your PC has a 64-bit AMD or Intel processor, you will
most likely need the "amd64" images (though "i386" is also fine),
the "ia64" images will not work.
Originally the thing was able to...

Want to disassemble Toshiba Satellite L305 5919 by
[email protected]
I was given this dead Toshiba Satellite L305 5919 laptop. I was told
the prior owner probably ruined the mobo by trying to short out the
pins to bypass what he figured was the BIOS password. The screen lit
up just fine before he did that, but would not boot up because it said
it required a...

Pavillion PC 2026 Hard Drive Mounting Problem by

Should be simple. Seems not.
That said - I inherited this HP Pavillion P6 2026 desktop - the large
SATA hard drive had been removed. I want to mount a spare 3.5" drive
I have, but it looks like some sort of a mounting bracket is missing,
I so far see no way to mount the drive.
I have searched...

Kingston SSDNow 240GB = subtleties by
Norm X[_2_]
Hello hardware enthusiasts,
Kingston SSDNow 240GB is good value but it has subtleties. For my Acer M1640

was empty so I installed MBR and formatted exFAT, now with 1024 byte cluster
size. Below, I have pasted the...

UEFI...etc. chaos? by

Paul,
you seem to be one of the few people left who know computing
down to the level of:
at cold power up hardware determines where the programCounter
starts the first MACHINElevelInstruction;
which determines all that follows,
instead of just "push A, push B...".
OTOH I hear about ROM BIOS...
