(OT) "Vista sales outpace Windows XP launch." by
S.Lewis
According to MS, I guess.
'Lessee, if expected annual PC sales are nearly double from the time period
when Win XP launched, and we include the upgrade coupons and we
include......'
Spin, boys, spin....

(OT) "Wi-Fi Hotspots Are Doomed" from Information Week....... by
S.Lewis[_3_]
"....high speed wireless broadband to become widespread sooner than you
think."
http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2008/03/wifi_hotspots_a.html
When/if I can get a reliable and affordably priced solution here at my home
office, I can see jumping over. I wonder what this will do...

(OT) 256mb PC133 SODIMM for sale if anyone wants it. by
S.Lewis
As proof that one should listen to Edward Neth as well as to one's own
instincts, I've possession of a brand new Samsung (8-chip) 256mb PC133
SODIMM that I can't use in my laptop (Latitude CPxJ GT650).
One might think that after all the years of reading, listening, and
observing, I would've...

(OT) Anyone seeing any Seagate HDD's dying? by
S.Lewis[_3_]
Just wondering. In the last couple of weeks I've had both an external 250gb
FreeAgent drive brought to me that had gone tango uniform.
Now, this week, a brand new Seagate PATA internal I ordered for a laptop
arrived DOA.
FWIW, I have been seeing (over the past several months) a lot of Hitachi...

(OT) AVG 8.0 Pro (purchased version). It's not just an AV anymore. by
S.Lewis[_3_]
FYI,
I'm seeing annoying web performance with AVG 8.0 due to (2) new added
features of the program:
-"Web Shield"
-"Link Scanner"
Obviously a well-intentioned part of the program to avoid malicious
scripting on websites. One of the interesting features of the Link Scanner

(OT) Comodo firewall experience, fyi..... by
S.Lewis
Again, a nice little software firewall that's very friendly and appears to
be extremely effective.
Example: I had installed it for trial on what is - in effect - my main
machine on the home network. There are shares involved, primarily the "My
Music" folder to the 3/4 other machines on the...

(OT) Defrag - How Often? by
Dean-MN
Hi,
I haven't done a defrag for over a year in the thought that with the high
access times and large hard drives, a defrag isn't needed very often. Now
while poking around Vista Home Premium I find that the kids in Redmond set
as default a defrag every Wednesday at 1:00 a.m. That explains why...

(OT) Dell system purchases off of ebay. by
S.Lewis
All,
I've purchased fully 2-3 dozen used Dell systems off of ebay both for myself
and others and using moderate to extreme caution when doing so have had
nothing but good experiences. Great, in fact.
However -
My last transaction for a notebook over there has turned ugly (though I'm
covered by...

(OT) Do you consider WildTangent to be spyware? by
S.Lewis
It's installed by at least some of the OEM PC mfrs, it (at least at one
time) secretly rode "piggyback" on downloaded AOL AIM installs.
It apparently has the ability to identify machines that connect to it's
update (updates are automatic and not prompted, btw) and game servers. Some
articles...
