How slow is USB 1.0? by
Ablang
I was trying to copy files from my 8.4GB to my 64MB USB 1.0 stick.
About how long would it take to x-fer 10MB from my HD to my memory stick?

sometimes boots to BIOS, sometimes not even that by
Ablang
I inherited a computer that sometimes boots up all the way to
Windows 98, but sometimes it doesn't even bring up the BIOS. In other
words, sometimes I see nothing on the screen. The power supply works,
because it makes noise regardless of what the system does.
Assuming I have no other computers...

Bootable CD drive - how to tell? by

Is there a list of bootable CD drives out there? How can you
tell if yours is bootable, besides trying to install Windows off the
CD and risking it not working w/o a floppy boot disk?

Updating BIOS to use bigger HDs? by
Ablang
http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?catid=28&threadid=320440
I have an older computer that uses a Soyo SY-V6BE+ motherboard, and it
would recognize my new WD 80GB 7200rpm 8MB HD. So I check my AWARD
BIOS (1999)manufacturer, and it turns out that I need to update my
BIOS to recognize a...

Nothing on screen, no CMOS beeps by
Ablang
It is the same motherboard (Abit Be6-II) and CPU (Celeron
533). But I did get more RAM for the system. Maybe it is picky about
the RAM I put in, even though I am adding the same PC100 RAM in it. I
had a friend who had a Packard Bell that seemed finicky about getting
extra RAM.
The fans turn on,...

CMOS checksum error by

I just 'inherited' a p3-500, and every now and then, upon bootup, I
will see the "CMOS checksum error" message. What does that mean and how do
I remedy it?
It is a SOYO SY-V6BE+

The life of a hard drive? by
Ablang
How long are hard drives supposed to last anyway (in your
experience)? I know some probably have an MTBF of about 30 years, but I
had a WD 6.x GB HD that just became as good as dead a few weeks ago (too
many bad sectors; scandisk ran forever).
So tell me about the bad ones in your life?

CPU thermal paste? by
Ablang
I just inherited a K6-2 300 Mhz computer, but the CPU fan & heatsink
keeps falling down off the CPU, which means that the thermal paste is no longer
sticking.
Does anyone know a good place online where I can buy this cheap, or
perhaps someone has ideas for other ways of keeping the fan & heatsink...

Can you mix PC133 & PC100 RAM together? by
Ablang
I looked up the info for my motherboard, a SOYO SY-V6BE+ and it says it
only takes PC100 RAM (even the online manual says this). Does this mean it
won't run PC133 RAM, and can I mix 133 & 100 RAM on this board?
Who has experience doing this on their boards?

Nothing on screen, no CMOS beeps by
Ablang
What does that mean when you turn on the computer, and there is
nothing on screen, & no CMOS beeps (yes, the speaker on the case is
plugged into the motherboard).
What do you think are the likely culprits for this? Can RAM placement
or order have anything to do with this?
