mini-ATX/ITX MB w/AM2 questions/recommendations? by
bobmct
I need to build a new desktop PC. My current one is circa 2001 w/its
last BIOS update from 2002 (no more available). Although it has
served be well there are things it cannot/won't do.
I have been a big fan of Shuttle XPC for a number of years especially
AMD based. So, when this time came...

ps/2 KVM to USB port PC? by
bobmct[_2_]
I have four desktop systems that all share the same
display/keyboard/mouse via a startech SV411K KVM.
On my new machine it has NO ps/2 ports and the supplied keyboard/mouse
are USB only.
I've purchased a pair of PS/2 female to USB male to plug the KVM
cables into the USB ports. But the machine...

Clone Drive Does Not Have All The Bytes by
BobN
I am running Windows XP Home SP2.
My C: drive is a WD, EIDE, 20Gb, single partition, FAT 32 containing some 8
Gb of data.
The clone drive is as above in an external enclosure connected through the
USB port.
I usually clone the C: drive about once a month using Retrospect Express.
No errors are...

Modern External HD box supports only FAT32 by
[email protected]
Recently I've bought an external HD enclosure 3.5", USB2.0.
When I've opened it up, the instruction manual says it supports only
FAT32. Indeed it does, as my NTSF HD was invisible. Is it this
particular product specific or most of external systems are like that?
I assume the limitation comes from...

Pin 12 and Pin 9 in ATX Power connector - wattage question by
BobTheCat
We tested my PS connector because the mobo and cpu stopped working.
Pin 12 is supposed to be at -12 watts but is putting out onlt -11 watts.
Pin 9 is supposed to put out +5 watts but is outputting +7.5 watts.
(The rest are what they should be).
Do we need a new PS or are these variations normal...

athlon xp 2800 - Ghz? by
BobTheCat
Hi,
I just ordered a replacement for my Dad's burned up 2800 AMD Athlon XP (fan
and heatsink fell off) with a new one.
He insistes that his previous CPU said "2.75 or 2.8Ghz" in the POST when he
booted his PC but the specs on the one I ordered says it's a 2.08Ghz CPU.
Are there different speeds...

BobTheCat
I'm putting together an old PC for a friend.
It's a Dell Dimension L500c mobo and case.
I updated the BIOS.
Fdisked, formatted, and transferred the System to the HDD.
Selected AUTO in BIOS for IDE 0 (it won't take the actual numbers when I
choose USER).

risk avoidance / metal shavings in the wrong ... by
Bob[_17_]
Any one ever have trouble from electrical shorts due to metal shavings
falling on a connector?
I was thinking of either using a smaller machine screw and nut or
maybe just covering the inside of the hole with putty, tighten the
screw and finally remove the putty. A magnet would only help with...

Seeking a derivation of the Chipkill ECC algorithm by
Bob[_28_]
I'm seeking a detailed mathematical derivation of the
Chipkill algorithm, which does an advanced form of error
checking and correcting for computer memory. I've
done quite a lot of searching on the Internet for it, but
so far I've come up dry. Does anyone know where I
could find it?

How to model cosmic ray corruption of DRAM memory? by
Bob[_28_]
I'd like to study how well Chipkill advanced ECC detects
multiple errors in a DRAM memory module. I've written software
that implements the Chipkill algorithm, and now I'm seeking more
detail about exactly how cosmic rays can corrupt DRAM bits.
Such as, when a cosmic ray changes a bit in DRAM, how...

New build is dead by
Bob[_28_]
I upgraded my computer yesterday. The green power light on my new
motherboard board comes on and the fans come on. The external power
and HDD lights come on and the lights on the external peripherals (DVD
writer, floppy, ZIP drive) flash. Then -- nothing. No video at all,
the screen just stays...

Ram Question by
Bob[_31_]
I just bought a new computer. Windows XP Pro. The MB is Foxconn. I never
heard of them either :)
But my question is that it has 2 memory slots with only the first one having
a 2 gig stick in it. Now WinXP only handles 3 Gigs (2 is fine for me) but I
thought that both sides had to have an equal...

Totaly toasted :( by
Bob[_31_]
I turned on my 5 y/o computer and actually smelled smoke. The $%$$^%(^%
thing toasted itself. So I went out and bought a ready made one. Not bad.
But now I want to get a new monitor. My old eyes can't zero in on the small
fonts on a 36" LCD TV that was my monitor. Anyone hear of a brand called...
