2nd build - after 5 years by
Tom Thompson
Just finished assembling my 2nd build. Consists of an ASUS Z97-PRO MB,
an i7-4790K, the lower half of a Cooler Master HAF Stacker 935, 32Gig
Ram, GTX770 video card and a double fan Thermaltak 3.0 water cooler for
the CPU. Power for the cooler comes from a motherboard USB header and
the cooler...

Any chance of damage from test boot? by
Larc[_3_]
I got my hands on a refurbished ASUS Z87-A motherboard and have no idea what the BIOS
version is. The original board sticker indicates it's earlier than will support the
CPU I have to go in it, but I'm thinking the BIOS was likely updated when the board
was refurbished. The only way I know to...

Racy Puppy by
Flasherly[_2_]
Kinda cool for potluck. Mounted this* on a USB stick (8G)...
racy-5.5.iso, (via RUFUS), and hardly is taking up anything.
Which means, I'll need, probably, another Boot Arbitrator in case I
run out of USB Operating Systems on FlashSticks. How is GRUB
pronounced, anyway...
Everything set to get...

Doubt with a delicate balance of politics for ensuing a neverending
Gulf War for garbage-truck sized, redneck mindsets for having the best
fossil-fuel truck (over you, ef'er, advertising has to offer) -- that
I'll ever own one, a mini-sized battery car. Just saying, I wouldn't

Been using Trackman Marble Trackballs for ages and getting tired of
Logitech's chinchy microswitches wearing out. This last one, if it
all, looks like a "breaker upper" while trying to find the plastic
pressure connects. I could swap the left and right microswitches
embedded into the the...

II LooK @W7 by
Flasherly[_2_]
Thing is kicking my ass, between the NT bootloader, special
crypt-locker security crap, hidden partiton, and the install. Round
and round, some more we go.
Trying to position it at advantage to where I can get it just right
and nail it with a binary sector backup. Uh huh.
Nooo way. Installed...

Why is Microsoft run by morons? by

When I install a program or an update and the idiot popup appears why doesn't it say...
"Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to files in the following directories? program name, company name, directory1, directory2, directory3..."
Instead you have to grant permission...

The end of the road for the DIY PC? by
Yousuf Khan[_2_]
Intel has announced that they will stop making replaceable CPU's after
Haswell. From now on, all CPU's are supposed to be in BGA packaging,
which means you can only attach CPU's to the motherboard by soldiering
them on. You won't be seeing these in any home DIY's toolkit, so it's
the end of the...

totaly remove bitlocker from usb drive by
Desmond[_3_]
Hi I need to totally remove bit locker from the USB drive. Having problems with old operating systems and bit locker is not required on this drive. I don't mean turning it off, I mean removing it totally. Can this be done as I have searched the web to find out.
TIA
Desmond.

Quiet build by

Streaming software sent an email last week stating many channels won't
work with the last version of IE that XP supports.
Guess it's time to update.
Surfing the net, reading email, and streaming video is about all it
would need to do.
Current system has XP, and an AMD cpu with a passmark score...

Using ribbon cable for panel-mount USB-2 motherboard cable? by
PC Guy[_2_]
Is there some reason that a panel-mounted USB cable like this:
http://m4.sourcingmap.com/photo_new/20090106/c/ux_a09010600ux0042_ux_c.jpg
couldn't be made with ribbon cable?
Assuming that there are female USB connectors designed for press-fit
ribbon cable?
You could make up a panel-mounted...

A reason I pay for for that card slot? by
Flasherly[_2_]
Yes. PCI-E Six Point Ohhhh One. It's the creamy sound.
According to the industry, I don't need more than one, if two, PCI
(non-E) slots.
But, I do need buy, that means to pay my cash for that graphics port
PCI-E slot. Most definitely. Must have. With no exceptions.
Understand? If you're so...

building an *OLD* PC will drive you nuts by

I needed to test something with old gcc, which meant using version 3.x
of RHEL. I downloaded Centos 3.9, but you neeed a ten-year old PC to
run it!
I have a mainboard with Intel 965+ICH8, but required some BIOS fiddling
to get the installer to see the CD drive. Next problem, graphics card.

What is the current situation with drive-bay multi-card readers(capacity) ? by
PC Guy[_2_]
Regarding those multi-card readers (SD, Compact Flash, etc) that slide
into a 3.5" drive bay, I know that the first generation of those
couldn't read SD cards larger than 2 or 4 gb.
I'm assuming that those are all off the market by now. (?)
What gets me is that in looking at what are being sold...

Problem I can't seem to solve by
Larc[_3_]
First I'll set the stage: I have 4 desktop computers kept in running order. #1 (my
main box) runs Win 8.1. #2 also runs 8.1. #3 is a backup for #1 and runs XP. #4 is
a backup for #2 and runs XP. When I upgrade from time to time, it's always for #1.
Stuff that's replaced there gets shunted to...
