Working on making a dual boot again, WinXP & Ubuntu by Nehmo
From what I've read, it seems easier to use BootMagic than the bootloader that comes with Windows. But I might be wrong. I don't know this subject. This is where I'm at now: As you can see by this screenshot of Computer Management: http://home.kc.rr.com/plumb/comman.gif I'm running on WinXP...

RAID 5 vs. single SCSI drive? by Carlos Moreno
Hi, I'm trying to decide between these two options, for a server running Linux (RedHat 9, most likely), which will be used as a database server, running PostgreSQL (version 7.4, most likely). We are talking about peak load in the order of 20 or 30 inserts per second, with clients connecting from...

5.25" floppy drive to IDE to USB? by Anthony K.
Is it possible to get a vintage 5.25" PC floppy drive connected to a modern PC with no floppy controller and just USB/FireWire inputs? Do IDE 5.25" floppy drives exist? If so, I could drop one into a USB enclosure. Is there an adapter that would let me connect a floppy drive to an IDE...

Building a new system: SCSI or IDE? by Jonathan Sachs
I'm assembling a new system in a couple of months, and am facing the old dilemma: SCSI or IDE disks? I have traditionally insisted on SCSI disks because they're faster and more reliable. Lately I've been having some hearing problems, though, and the drive noise is bothering me. Thus I'm motivated...

HDD reads slower and slower... by [email protected]
Hello! I have an old Maxtor 53073U6 (Firmware DA620CQ0) Serial No (K60BMHKC). I noticed the HDD was reading slow like less than 3 MB/sec. Today I noticed it went under 1 MB/sec in some benchmark tests (hdparm /dev/hda command in Debian/Linux). It is not consistent. It never goes above 5 MB/sec....

StarTech ATA-100 cables any good? by Will Dormann
Tony wrote: I need a 24" cable and I can get a StarTech round for a good price. Any signal integrity issues with this brand (since they are so cheap)? Round cables are a bad idea. Cables over 18" are also a bad idea. Combine the two, and you're just asking for trouble.
