Tails by Desmond[_3_]
Hi I noticed this on the BBC click program and thought I would have a play with it. I have had problems in the past with windows crashing and I thought it would be an easy way to retrieve files. I downloaded the iso and burnt it to a dvd. There is no autrun.inf so how can it work. Amazingly it...

PCs that do not power up by [email protected]
Since the late 90s, I have come across quite a few PCs that do not power on. I have checked out the power supply, the power switch, removed everything except one stick of RAM, and they still lie dead. I would expect there was a simple on-off connection to fire up the ATX power supply, but there...

Major new development in Windows 98 RAM memory capability patch has beendiscovered! by 98 Guy[_2_]
I'm re-posting the following to a few newsgroups where I know some people still run win-98 as part of dual-boot setup, or have recently moved away from win-98, or for general knowledge. For at least the past 4 years, some windows-98 users have been able to use up to 4 gb of ram by using these...

Read Verify Sector Ext error! by Doc Savage
I just formatted a 1 TB WD Green SATA drive and ran, or tried to run WD LifeGuard diagnostics tests on it. It passes the SMART test but the quick test and extended test both fail quickly with this message: Read Verify Sector Ext error! After this happened the first time I tried a chkdsk, but am...

Backing up (applications and settings) an Android tablet? by John Doe
Is there anything similar to the function of Macrium Reflect, for backing up applications and settings on an Android tablet? I suspect it would use a PC to help, I doubt you can boot to a different device (like a CD or flash drive) on a tablet. Thanks.

screwed over by 6 TB drives by [email protected]
The WD He6 lacks 2 centre screw holes. The Seagate 6 TB is even worse - all centre holes gone AWOL. I have an old Antec case under the bed: the low-noise job with rubber slings for the hard drives. Geez that was a dud idea. Maybe it's better just to attach the drives with 2 screws.

An option to NOT show zip files as expanded in Windows 7 Explorer? by John Doe
I recently had trouble recognizing the fact that a download was actually a compressed file. Not likely to happen again, but maybe an option to prevent Windows Explorer from showing compressed files as ordinary folders (with subfolders shown) might be worth a try. I do have file extensions shown,...

Windows 7 Force Setting of Sharing and Security codes on Backup Drive by [email protected]
I never used Sharing and Security on backup or any drive cuz I'm the only one using alone. I've used secondary backup drive from one computer to another without putting any Sharing and Security codes.... On Windows 7, it forced to setup it or the drive is inaccessible. So I did setup it in big...

Sound recording problem by Rebel1
I installed a Sound Blaster Audigy Fx card and found that its Mixer function shows record gain sliders for Line In and Mic, but not for Stereo Mix (aka Record What I Hear). So I can only record (using Cool Edit Pro 2.1) from these two external sources. I right-clicked on the Speaker icon and...

Since when does moving files extract files? by John Doe
I recently downloaded the Android SDK (1 GB). Then I tried to move the thing and it took forever. And there were files left over. So I redid the download. Afterwards... This time using the right mouse button click and drag to select "move". Same thing happened. Windows Explorer gets tied up...

Newegg selling cheaper on eBay by John Doe
FF-TSDG32GA-C10 micro SD 32 GB flash memory card Just noticed. It's the small and thin kind of product that ships quick and easy via eBay, that's why I looked. Whether this is the same with very many Newegg products, I dunno.

Vista can't see any sound cards by [email protected]
I dug out an old PC from my wife's former business. It has Vista home premium 32-bit. Sound was not working. Device manager showed no audio devices. I went into BIOS and disabled the onboard sound chip, and plugged in a PCI sound card. Booted Vista, and it did not detect new hardware. So next I...

OT, Android tablets, Adobe is conspiring with Microsoft? by John Doe
Assuming this is true... "Adobe stopped supporting Flash player with the introduction of Android 4.0" Seems like Adobe has been Microsoft's right-hand man ever since Windows 3.1 or earlier. It's always been in Windows, apparently never threatened by a Microsoft takeover. So what's the deal...
