building nas server for home network by
[email protected]
Hi,
I'm in need for (budget) storage at home. After doing a little
research i decided to build my own NAS server.
I've got an "old" AMD Athlon XP 2400+ with one GB of ram, so that will
be more than sufficient i guess.
I've been thinking of doing the following, but i wonder if it's the
best way...

Troubleshooting SANs by
[email protected]
I work for a consulting firm, and have begun to do troubleshooting on
small SANs, mostly HP MSA1500cs based.
Many times the problem the customer is talking about is some vague
intermittent slowness issue or something like that. In cases like
this, my troubleshooting goes something like this:
1. ...

STK L40 and Quantum DLT7000 problems... by
Brian Greenberg
I recently moved our L40 from one office to an other and somewhere
along the line, the STK L40 didn't agree with the move and decided
that it wasn't going to communicate with one of the DLT7000 drives in
the library.
The library as a whole seems to be working fine and of the two DLT7000
drives in...

USB mass storage error recovery by
[email protected]
I'm getting stuck trying to figure out how to recover from a
USB mass storage "error". This is for "bulk only" protocol.
The root problem is that the RTOS we use is returning errors
when they don't really exist and terminating transfers in
the middle. I think I can fix that problem, but in...

What is the difference between a JBOD and a SAN? by
JRoughgarden
We have an application that is experiencing I/O contention,
particularly in tempdb but also in two other databases. The data is
stored on mirrored PowerVault 220's, each with 10 of 14 possible disks.
The PowerVaults are JBOD devices, not true SANs. The current config has
four separate groups of...

AIX 4.3.3 with two 6228 HBA - Too much rmt created by
fx
Hello,
On an AIX 4.3.3 server with two 6228 HBAs :
fscsi0 (tapes) - PtP connection to an ADIC snc5100/Scalar1000/LTO1x6
fscsi1 (disk) - connected trough an IBM FC switch to an ESS disk array
Problem is for each physical tape drive, cfgmgr creates two "rmt" devices.
The NetBackup "scan" command...

Hardware raid question (do I need a 4-port card) by
[email protected]
I've got 4X60 GB identical drives that I'd like to use for home office
RAID in an XP server box. I've looked on eBay and found a ton of cheap
2-port IDE cards that claim to support up to 4 IDE devices. I
understand the RAID levels, but I don't follow how a card with 2 ports
can support 4 devices....

Labelling on Legato Networker? by
[email protected]
I am using X-Windows to administer my Legato Networker 7.1.2.
Prior to the server hardware upgrade (new machine), when we labelled
previously labelled volume, there isn't any prompt for confirmation.
With Networker re-installation, I am unable to switch off the label
overwrite prompting.
There...

External disk drives and portability by
David Arnstein
I'm planning to use external disk drives for backup. I'm looking at
the nicely packaged enclosures from Maxtor, Western Digital, and Seagate.
I keep one set of backups "offsite," and this is giving me a bit of a
worry. Roughly once a month, I hand-carry backup media from my PC to
the "offsite"...

Data Robotics "Drobo". Anyone ever heard of this? by
Gary Seven
Just wondering if anyone has used or seen this so-called "raid alternative."
They call it a "storage robot." No, I am not spamming for this company, I
actually just read about them in PC Photo's enewsletter, and was wondering
if anyone out there has heard anything about this storage solution, good...

hard disk failure data point by
Paul Rubin
About 4 years ago I bought a Maxtor Diamondmax 60GB ATA drive at
CrapUSA. I didn't really need it, but was just astounded at the
concept of being able to buy such a high capacity drive for a mere
$300 (of course that amount will get you a much bigger drive now). My
system at the time was using a...

Cannot Get AIT2 LVD To Work by
CHANGE USERNAME TO westes
Our AIT2 HVD drives have been among the most reliable we have used. We
have used them both with differential SCSI controllers as well as HVD fibre
bridges, both with great success. In our test lab, where we have two
permanent test servers that have Adaptec 39160 LVD host adapters, I cannot
get...

SAN or FC Switch not passing device "name" to HBA? by
ohaya
Hi,
I realize that this is a kind of esoteric question, but I hope that
someone here can help.
We have some systems with dual-channel QLogic QLA2312 FC HBAs. These
are connected to an EMC 32-port FC Switch, which is in turn connected to
an EMC Clariion CX700 SAN.
Once we get everything...

sldt vs lto2 by
sergio
Hi,
i'm gonna buy a new tape 'cause the dlt 40/80 i'm using now is not enough
any more and i have to choose between sdlt and lto2.
Simply looking at the specs i'd go with lto2, but i'd like to know if
there are people that used both standards who can post their impressions.
Looking at lto2 drives...
