Intel Forced to Remove "Cripple AMD" Function from Compiler? by

Intel Forced to Remove "Cripple AMD" Function from Compiler?
"In fact, Fog points out that even benchmarking programs are affected by
this, up to a point where benchmark results can differ greatly depending
on how a processor identifies itself. Ars found out that by changing the
CPUID of a VIA...

free multi-user remote desktop utility by
Yousuf Khan
Is there a free remote desktop utility that allows multiple simultaneous
user logins? I've been using Windows RDP as well as TightVNC so far, and
they are both fine. But what I'd really like is something that will
allow users to remain actively logged in without suspending them in the...

Another AMD supercomputer, 13,000 quad-core by
.Some.Guy.
The new computer, to be built by Sun Microsystems Inc. using 13,000
microprocessors made by Advanced Micro Devices Inc., will be more
powerful than any supercomputer currently in operation, UT says.
It will have a peak computing power of more than 400 trillion
operations per second, which makes it...

Intel leaving low-end chipset business? by
Yousuf Khan
It seems Intel is running tight on low-end chipset capacity at its
older fabs, and is going to concentrate on the high-end Centrino
chipsets and stuff. That means all of the Celerons will be left high
and dry (can't run a CPU without chipset -- yet). It's not likely that
the Taiwanese chipset...

Jury rules for AMD in discrimination suit by
CLF
I'm sure I've been discriminated against cuz I'm white, but you don't see me
bitching.
Anytime any minority (which collectivley probably is majority) is passed up
for a job or screws something up it is always discrimination.
Good ruling on this case....

P4 retail box thermal material? by
Johannes H Andersen
When I opened the box, I found a black piece of tape or whatever on the
bottom of the heat sink. Is that part of the thermal material or should
I remove it?
I've also looked at Intel's site and downloaded a pdf on the thermal
management and fitting, but found no instructions to remove the...

Commoditization of 4-way by
Yousuf Khan
I know there is a little bit of skepticism (well actually a lot of it) about
x86's potential in the 4-way market. The high-end server market has feasted
on the high prices due to the lack of competition from any commodity systems
at this level. There's been talk for years that Intel is finally...

White box market share by
Felger Carbon
There has been some discussion here lately as to how much PC market
share is divided between Dell, HPaq, and white boxes.
Now both Dell and HPaq are in the business of selling white boxes:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=12637
Can someone tell me if a Dell white box sale (or HPaq) is...

New Motherboard & Old Hard Drives by
Longfellow
I've been using a Tyan Tsunami 1830s with a P3 850, a 440BX chipset,
and a Maxtor 40G hard drive with Win98 on it. If I get a P4
motherboard, will I simply be able to install my HD on it and boot up,
or will I have to reformat the HD and reload everything.
Thanks in advance for the info.

Athlon 64 headroom? by
Robert Flint
When a new CPU is released it generally goes through a development cycle
where the speed is gradually increased until the design 'runs out of steam'
and a completely new solution is required. The P4 and the Athlon have
increased in speed between 2 and 3 times since launch.
I have heard that there...

Linux as an office desktop by
Yousuf Khan
Here's an article from two years ago:
http://www.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=01/08/10/1441239
Notice that they are talking about secretaries running KDE and not caring.
One secretary is already more familiar with it than she is with Windows at
home.
If this could be done two years ago, it can...

Whatever happened to x86-64? by
YKhan
Adorable little Ed Stroglio rant:
Hatching Eggs . . .
"Remember x86-64? The stick AMD was supposed to beat Intel to death
with?
Then Intel got themselves the same stick, and the would-be beaters
found something else to talk about. Yes, AMD is doing better now, but
not because of x86-64. Indeed,...

Intel guy looking the AMD direction for the first time. by
No spam
Hello everyone. I am looking to buy a new desktop PC. I currently have
a Compaq Pentium 3 733 MHz desktop and a Dell 2.0 GHz Celeron laptop.
I have always been a fan of Intel... mainly because when I got into
computers there was no AMD. My first IBM based PC was an 8088 with
640k RAM and a 21...

A64 mobos for $80 by
Yousuf Khan
754-pin Athlon 64 mobos can be had for as little as $80. Based on SiS 755
chipset. This chipset seems to a little pocket rocket, apparently better at
i/o than its rivals. Combine with a $200 A64 3000+, and things are getting
affordable. One of first SIS based mobos is the ECS-755. These SIS...

Who owns patents of DRAM, EDO RAM, SDRAM, DDR RAM, DDR2 RAM? by

I only know Rambus invented RDRAM. Besides that, which companies or parties
invented the rest of different kinds of memory? I remember back to late
90's, RDRAM was hot when they came out and had Intel's endorsement, but
RAMBUS want to charge a lot on this technology, so the majority of...
