Abit NV8 Stability Problems and Kingston ValueRAM by Sketch
I have 1GB of Kingston ValueRAM (Dual Channel, 512MB RAM x 2, Part # KVR400X64C3AK2/1G) in my new Abit NV8 build. I figured a "value" mobo would do fine with "value" RAM. Not the case! Here's my problem: When set to "Auto" in the BIOS, the two sticks of RAM together default to DDR333. Windows is...

Max resolutions? by spbg
I was looking to get rid of my CRT and buy an LCD monitor, but I was wondering about resolutions. I see most max resolutions of 1600 x 1200 and 1280 x 1024, when mine can go up to 1800 x 1440. Is it software, such as drivers that are allowing it to go that high, or my monitor?

USB Controller? by Johanna
Hi I am unsure of what to make of the error message that I am getting when I plug my iPod into my home-built Shuttle. The message says something along the lines of "This device can perform faster if you plug it into a USB 2 port". I actually thought my machine had USB 2. The error is also talking...

Getting a printer to work... (maybe off topic) by S. Whitmore
I couldn't find a more appropriate newsgroup and figured the homebuilt-PC population would be a good group for creatively finding a way to make things work, but if you know of a better newsgroup, feel free to drop me a line or reply here and set followups to that newsgroup. I recently bought a...

Optical drive recommendation by BP
If you are going to have a CD-RW drive and a DVD-RW drive, is it better to have 2 separate drives or a combo drive? What do most people here do?

Fan speed by Fan
Today, I replaced my HP d330 motherboard for a new Asus P4RD1-MX. The transplantation went OK, but now my fans are operating at full speed and they are producing a lot of noise. This happens from the moment that I start the computer. The temperature of the CPU is not the problem I think. I tried...

Philips 7134 TV tner Card by [email protected]
I just got this PC TV tuner card based on the Philips chipset and can't seem to get it to work. WIN XP recognizes that there is a card, but when I try too load the drivers, XP says it can't find the drivers even though they are there on the disk. Has anyone had a similar problem? Not sure if card...

HELP please - motherboard problem, doesn't power HD, no boot, etc. by Gigi
Hi, I have a PC system with Asus P4S533-MX motherboard. All was working fine but recently I took my computer out to the shop (in very cold weather, if it's of any significance), and when I came back and tried to turn it on I got the following situation: 1. Motherboard powers on (the motherboard...

New psu - no power to system. by tom
Hi there. My power supply on my PC is overheating, so I decided to buy a new one. I made sure that the one that I bought was ATX with 20pins and had the 4 pin connector for P4. It does. The only difference between the old one and the new one is that the new one is 450W and the old one was 300W....

Thoughts before I order these parts for new system build? by tom
I'll try to answer to your questions: 1. On paper, the 7800GT is a far superior card to the 6800GT, and most benchmarks put it between 40 - 80% faster (but I've seen the difference as high as 120% and as low as 5% on some titles). For most current applications all this means is that you'll get a...

Intermittent Card Reader Problem by Erick
First, is the USB port 1.1 or 2.0? And is the reader 1.1 or 2.0? USB 2.0 devices in 1.1 ports can sometimes stop working until "reset" (ie: plugging back in or rebooting). Since it's happened on multiple computers and readers, it's also possible that the contacts on the cards are dirty or failing....

WinXP reinstall-Ooops!! by pheasant
After working around some hardware issues that corrupted WinXP to the point of not booting, put the CD in the drive, and reinstalled over the top of the old install. I've never done a reinstall before, always started with a freshly formatted disk, so this was a new experience for me. Pretty much...

Pet peave - poorly written manuals (especially mb manuals) by [email protected]
This is just a random rant... I get really frustrated by some of the manufacturers that include manuals that are skimpy and obviously written by a person that doesn't speak English very well at all. People are often saying "read the manual" before you post questions on a newsgroup, but sometimes...
