Asynchronous writing on USB 2.0 flash drive by
Cristiano[_2_]
I'm trying to asynchronously write several USB 2 flash drives under Win7
as explained he
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa365683%28v=vs.85%29.aspx
My program hangs and the same happens when I use the "4K QD32"
CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 x64 write test.
All work fine when...

Is this external Seagate 500 GB HDD dying? by
Ant[_3_]
Hello.
Earlier today, I tried to do a weekly back up (Time Machine) but Mac OS
X 10.8.5 refused to mount its MacHFS partition (FAT32 was OK). Its Disk
Utility ran for a long time on MacHFS partition, couldn't repair it, and
told me to back it up if possible. Since it was a back up of the...

What possible use for an HD with many bad sectors? by
[email protected]
I recently found that the 2.5" 600MB HD on my laptop had 269
reallocated sectors, which I'm told is obscenely high. So I backed up
to another HD and am now using it as the main drive.
It seems to me that the dubious drive doesn't really have a use except
for things that you don't care about...

Seagate 1.5TB HD showing as 500GB by
LoBatt
Hello all, sorry if this has been covered, but I have not been able to
turn up a thread on this subject.
I can use some help installing my new Seagate 1.5TB HD as a data
drive. Everything is telling me it is a 500GB drive, including the
bios, a right click, and accessing the Disk Management...

SCT Error Recovery Control onj Seagate? by
Grant[_6_]
Hi,
Running a RAID6 array, noticed the drives were set to minimum timeout
for error recovery. I suspect this is being done by the newly installed
IBM ServeRAID BR10i or LSI SAS3082E-R RAID controller card.
System is Slackware64-14.1 with 3.16.1 kernel.
# smartctl -l scterc /dev/sdf

Drive errors for Sata 6.0 drive with Sata 3.0 hard disk controller by
Edward Diener
I have a Sata 6.0 drive, an Hitachi GST Deskstar H3IK20003272SP, which
strangely enough I have only used intermittently mostly for data backup.
I have been using it on an older system ( circa 2008 ) whose Sata
controller only supports Sata 3.0.
I had experienced occasional problems in the past...

data transfer speed with NAS? by
[email protected]
Suppose I got an enterprise-grade NAS and connect it to one workstation (at least a Sandy Bridge i7) via ethernet so the NAS is pumping out a large file at 1 Gb/s.
What data rate would I get? 100 MB/s?

Is it true that it is a bad idea to put a swap/pagefile on a SSD? by
Ant[_3_]
Because that wears out the SSD quickly, and it is better to put it on a
slow HDD. If so, then how do computer (especially laptop/notebook) users
with only a SSD (not hybrids with HDDs) do this? I assume Windows, Mac
OS X, and Linux follow this rule?
Currently, I have a Debian stable box that...

A proposal to extend MS MBR disc labels to support LBA-48 by
Andrew Buckeridge
A standard MS MBR disc label as used by GNU/Linux only supports
LBA-32. The bogus CHS junk could be used to add support for
the LBA-48 capability of ATA drives. Given that 1 TB discs are
available the 2 TiB MS MBR limit could be reached with a RAID.
A partition entry in an MS MBR disc label:...

life of LTO drives? by
[email protected]
Somebody offered me a pair of used HP LTO drives if I pay for
freight only. They are 6 years old, but claimed only to be used
for church on Sundays.
I have had a few tape drives (Exabyte, 3590 and DLT) and they
were trouble.
So I wonder if the LTO are any better.

Fixing and recovering encrypted storage devices (e.g., HDDs)... by
Ant[_3_]
.... It is nice to be able to recover, fix, and access disks that are
easy to access with those bootable medias because they are insecured.
What about when you guys have to deal with encrypted disks? How does
that work if the disks are having problems?
Thank you in advance. :)
