useless diagnostics from manufacturers by [email protected]
I wanted to test an old server that actually wasn't used much. It has some WD black 2 TB disks in it. I put in a WD Data Lifeguard CD, and it complains that it can't find the license file. Then tried Seagate Seatools - it set wrong video mode, so just got scrambled pixels. Next Hitachi diagnostic,...

How come Seagate -- to name just one manufacturer -- can sell an external 6TB drive in a case with a USB 3.0 adapter and a cable for less than they sell any 6TB internal drive?

should brand new drive have 'power on hours' = zero? by [email protected]
If a drive were tested before being stuffed in a retail box, that would be at least an hour per terabyte. So is POH reset by manufacturer?

Can I install a UEFI hard drive as the main (boot) drive in a legacy(BIOS) Windows 7 system? by Sam
I understand that you can get Windows to show the drive if it's connected via external enclosure, but is there a workaround to have the larger UEFI as the main boot drive or must I stick with a lower capacity drive as the boot drive?

"automotive grade" hard drives by [email protected]
We have specialty AV, NAS drives et cetera. I see Toshiba has automotive disks. The maximum capacity is 320 GB, so I presume these trade off density to cope with operating in a moving car. But would not SSD be better for this?
