Today was another weird day electronics wise. I had to pull out all cables. The monitor did not want to turn off. The old PC also didn't boot. It does this each time but this time it was worse.

Power supply fried, replaced it, computer won't start by .
Yesterday morning, ten hours after I'd last powered my PC down, I turned it on and noticed immediately a burning "electrical fire" smell. Turned the computer off (using Windows shutdown first from the login screen), disconnected all peripherals and the power, opened the case. Attached the...

RAID1 - what happens if your motherboard RAID controller dies? by [email protected]
I have a motherboard with a hardware RAID controller built in and I intend to set up two identical drives in RAID 1 configuration. My worry is how I would go about recovering the data from either drive if my motherboard goes down. I assume that you can't just plug one of the drives in to another...

Rebooted and my computer won't boot up. by Ant
Hello! Earlier today, I was doing stuff in Debian like upgrading my Kernel (2.6.18 with an updated package) and rebooted. The computer never rebooted and it just got stuck (I think after shutdown -r now told it to reboot -- shutdown seems to have completed). Hitting the reset button didn't do...

Recommend data recovery company? by B00ze
Good day. Got a 15 years old WD IDE hard drive, that was showing ZERO problems in SMART data, suddenly can no longer calibrate (i.e. it can't read anymore.) NOW the SMART data is showing something's wrong. Hard drive "clicks" (heads go back and forth full disk) then quits trying. Have another...

OT Bill Gates tells senators "we need more foreign programmers to remain competitive" by John Doe
Bill Gates was in Washington this week, as usual lobbying for an increase in H-1B visas. The richest man in the world earned his keep when he looked our president in the eye and (without laughing) said "Microsoft needs cheap, easy to control foreign programmers to remain competitive". Both Bill...

Dead computer? by Patty
Computer in question had a problem when it last ran... Computer froze and the only way they could shut it down was to unplug it. When they tried to power it up again, nothing would happen. They took it to the person who built it who proclaims, it's fried. She got it back from him (minus...

ZipZoomFly and DOA Hitachi SATA drives by Albert Silverman
A month ago, I ordered two 250GB SATA drives from ZipZoomFly.com. They both arrived DOA with scratches around the case screws. One was dented on the lid. I reported all this in my RMA request. After some delay, I was granted a RMA number, and sent them back. That was over two weeks ago. They've...

Suggestions for Core 2 Duo systems that use PCI - not PCI express? by muzician21
Right now I'm running a 2.4 gig P4 on a Soyo Dragon mobo. I could upgrade to a socket 478 3.4gig processor and get about a 30% bump in speed which wouldn't be bad, but it's my understanding going to a Core 2 Duo chip I could see a much bigger increase. I dont need to be on the cutting edge, what...

Cool electronics with outside air via hose. by Skybuck Flying[_2_]
Could be interesting idea... to connect the computer to the outside air via hose/tunnels. Except maybe in summer ;) But in winter it would supply the pc with cold outside air instead of room temperature ;) Bye, Skybuck.

What's your best guess? by Larc[_4_]
My PC won't start! I was checking the RAM with Memtest 86+ (v.1.70) while I watched TV. When I looked back at the computer at some point, the monitor had gone into sleep mode. Nothing would wake it. I noticed there was no HDD action. When I tried to reboot using the restart button, nothing...

Oh, the BLOAT! New PCs are so slow! by yep
I haven't bought a ready-made computer in years. I either build them new or rebuild old ones. I put Win98SE or WinXP on them, Word, Nero, PSP, Power DVD, AVG, etc. They always run nice and zippy. Well, I finally got a factory fresh Dell Inspiron, Celeron 2.3GHz with 256MBs. WHAT A DOG!!!...

Hello All, A friend of mine bought his computer over for me to have a look at it. I need to do a reinstall, but it's a Hewlett Packard with windows installed on a hidden partition. He had no other discs with him, so I was wondering how one goes about getting at the hidden partition to begin the...

Where did 1280x1024 come from? by Mxsmanic
Why is 1280x1024 so often included among other resolutions as an option for hardware and software monitor configuration? Almost all monitors have a 4:3 aspect ratio, and all selectable resolutions have the same ratio ... except 1280x1024. Why this exception to the rule? There must be some sort of...

If a just built PC goes bang on power-up... by Fred Finisterre
......what's the most likely thing I did wrong? I had a gunshot noise, a flash, and smoke coming from (near) the PSU. And which components are likely to be fried? Cheers, Fred.

Machine has suddenly slowed to a crawl by [email protected]
I'm running XP Pro SP2. I have Spybot S&D v1.4, Spyware Blaster v1.3, and McAfee VirusScan v10, all up to date. I have defragged my hard disk and run Chkdsk within the last week. Yesterday, all of a sudden, my machine slowed to a crawl, to the extent that when I'm typing, the screen can't update...
