ATA Reliability: Seagate, WD, Maxtor by _R
Not to start any heated disputes here, but I'd like to get general feedback re reliability of the three major brands. I run a few Raid arrays...Actually Raid 0, so reliability is important. WD was the first to feature larger buffers, and many started using them as a result of the p.r. surge. I'm...

Estimating RAID 1 MTBF? by ohaya
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to calculate/estimate the overall MTBF of a RAID 1 (mirrored) configuration? I'm just looking for a simple, "rule-of-thumb" type of calculation, assuming ideal conditions. I've been looking around for this, and I've seen a number of...

VXA tape flaw by Arthur Begun
If you are considering a VXA tape drive from exabyte (formerly ecrix) you should be aware of a fatal flaw. Even though ads show a tape soaking in a cup of coffee and a claim that the data is still recoverable, the tape header is extremely fragile. If you are doing a backup and the computer...

Tape Backup by [email protected]
I am looking for opinions on what a decent tape backup for a PC workstation might be, somewhere around 40 gigs or so, speed is not the biggest issue, mostly being reasonablly priced and around 40 gigs (give or take a few). I'm wondering what people think the better brands are for this type of...

Tape Backups are NEVER Reliable - EVER by Jolly Student
Okay Folks: Here is one for all of you who thought that people could not get any dumber. Yes, I am cross posting here but the recommendations for such are only in the case where the subject matter concerns a bunch of groups. I think this

Adaptec 2410SA SATA Raid 5 : is it a safe choice by Toto
I intend to build a small server for my (6 Win XP computers) home LAN, to backup my Data (and store some original documents). Adaptec 2410SA Serial ATA Raid card seems to be a nice choice in terms of price : you can use 4 cheap disks in Raid 5 mode to "secure" a capacity of 3. If I understood...

Good RAID for New Desktop Machine? by Doug White
I need to get a new desktop machine, and I'm planning on getting a card to support RAID mirroring in case of a disk crash. My wife has a 6 month old Dell that she bought with some brand of card & 2 drives, but Dell didn't install the card. We discovered that the first thing the card wants to...

Warranty Length Not Related To Drive Life? by Ron Reaugh
Has anyone ever heard anyone claim that the length of a HD's warranty was simply a marketing and price point decision by the mfg and the warranty length has nothing to do with expected drive life? Somewhere I think I remember someone making such a claim and a bunch of trolls tried unsuccessfully...

Utility to write huge files instantly??? by mike
Windows 2000, FAT32 or NTFS. For testing, I want a utility to create BIG files ~1GB on storage media quickly. Copying a big file is not an option, too slow. I don't care what's in the file as long as the OS is happy that it's a "valid" file. Needs to work thru normal OS drive letters and drivers.

Bulkiest removable storage media? by Tim Shoppa
What's the bulkiest removable storage media? Drums etc. don't count because you don't often switch the drum (although they certainly could be heavy judging by nothing but the size of the bearings). I worked with RP06 packs and some funky optical tape reels in the past, but those were pretty measly...

Loses data when PC shuts down by Maxim S. Shatskih
using this with firewire. I'm using Win 98, second edition. Stop using Win98, it's a crappy operating system with poor history (on-the-knee made-not-properly-designed-patch-over-the-paleolithic-MS-DOS). Use some of the Windows NT OSes - Win2000 or WinXP. -- Maxim Shatskih, Windows DDK...
