RAID! by _|_|_
I'm trying to find info on how Raid 5 works *in the case of 3 data drives + 1 parity*. I understand how exor'ing 2 data would yield a parity bit, but the 3data/1parity algorithm eludes me. I can't think of how you'd have enough info to recover, even if there were such a thing as a 3-input Exor....

Best way to image active system partitions by _R
To my knowldege, there are still 3 major players in drive imaging: Drive Image, Ghost and Acronis. Since the first two seem to be in a state of flux, I thought Acronis would be the best bet. Their simple, directl layouts general present things in a way that can be understood in the context of the...

RAID 1 solution for desktop by David Beasley
Hello All, I need to implement a RAID 1 solution for a high end desktop machine, and I'm considering 2 options: 1) Use the onboard(cheap) SATA RAID controller on my motherboard with 2 Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB 10K SATA drives. Approximate cost: $400.00 2) Purchase new SCSI RAID...

DVD changers for burners??? [revisited] by Ken Moiarty
Well guys, I finally found my 'holy grail' robot to physically automate CD/DVD disc spanning for backup purposes. No I'm not talking about one of those office copier sized machines that only institutions can get enough use out of to get a return on their institutional sized investment. However,...

A few questions before assembling Linux 7.5TB RAID 5 array by Yeechang Lee
I'm shortly going to be setting up a Linux software RAID 5 array using 16 500GB SATA drives with one HighPoint RocketRAID 2240 PCI-X controller (i.e., the controller will be used for its 16 SATA ports, not its "hardware" fakeraid). The array will be used to store and serve locally and via gigabit...

SAS / SATA RAID to Fibre? by Will
Does anyone make a standalone 1U or 2U rackmount device that does RAID 5 and 6 for SATA or SAS drives, and exposes the logical drive upstream by fibre channel? I'm wanting to use one of these per server, so space is an issue and a full on RAID controller with added separate cabinet for SAS or...

Is EMC's CAS Centera considered "permanent data"? by RobertDavid
My EMC rep couldn't answer this question... EMC's Centera is supposed to replace optical disk ("permanent data"), but an optical disks life is 35 years plus. Is the Centera considered "permanent data"? What are existing Centera customers supposed to do when EMC eventually EOL's and stops...

how about paging to SAN? by [email protected]
Hi, I'm considering to deploy my paging space in a SAN product, say, HDS AMS1000. I know it's a safer decision to use rootvg but I think it worths a discussion. It's a olap application so the paging is major of big data blocks. Pls share your opinions and pls share the experience using a paging...

Very High Rate Continous Transfer by [email protected]
I am looking into what it will take to support continuous (not burst) 160 to 200 MBytes/sec transfer to disk. What types of drives and how would they be configured as an array (or multiple arrays)? What type of processor and bus architecture would be appropriate? Data will be from a capture memory...

VTL vs. Backup to Disk by [email protected]
I'm trying to figure out the pros and cons for backing up to a disk device vs. using a virtual tape library like the Clariion Disk Library. You're backing up to disk on both of them, presumably at the same speeds but it seems that the VTL adds a level of complexity and cost. Does anyone have any...

RAID1 rebuild time question by Frank de Groot
I have a RAID1 with a Silicon Image SATA controller sil3114. Often, my PC bluescreens (that caused data corruption on my previous HD so I switched to RAID1). The SATARAID utility reports in such cases always an "event" (exceeding S.M.A.R.T status) and starts rebuilding. Incidentally, the same...

HP EVA3000" vs IBM DS4300 Turbo by Jesus
We are in the process of setting up a SAN of 2TBs and we are trying to decide between these two systems. EVA3000 permits virtualraid. IBM? For example, with 14 discs, EVA permits me to make a lun, partition it in different raid types to use it in the distinct servers. IBM? Can anyone help out?...

Raid 6 in use? by Jerry Cloe
Does anyone actually use RAID 6?? I've looked at several items recently from 3ware stuff, Dell stuff, and some of IBM's big stuff, and there is never any mention of Raid 6.

EMC SAN Question... by Michael
We have a few CX400s and EMC Fibre Switches at a datacenter. My boss is in charge of the SAN configuration and he really does a poor job of it. I'm looking to give him some help, but he doesn't really let anyone else touch the SAN except himself (which is hilarious, believe me). What I want to...

10 drive SCSI RAID array by Rick Kunkel
We're in the process of building a new server which is to be ultra-redundant, and there's been speculation on SCSI version, suitable flavors of RAID, replacement processes, and such. I'm hoping that someone here can answer a few quick questions. 1. This system is going to have 10 drives, all of...

SDLT wear & tear (small files vs. big files) by George Sarlas
Hello... I'm a storage newbie, so please forgive me if this is a stupid question. I've got a new StorageTek Library (L40) with an SDLT 320 drive in it. I am using Veritas NetBackup DataCenter for Windows 2000. My question has to do with wear and tear on the drive heads. My previous library (also...
