400 Mb/s ADC by
Jeff Peterson
We are building a new radio telescope called PAST
(http://astrophysics.phys.cmu.edu/~jbp/past6.pdf)
which we will install at the South Pole or in Western China.
To make this work, will need to sample (6 to 8 bit precision) dozens
of analog voltages at 400 Msample/sec and feed these data streams...

Newbie question... by
Peter Perlsų
I was just wondering...
how much bumping and tossing of a turned off drive does it take to
physically damage a hard disk ?
Do you have any horror stories to share ?

Best data archival media? by
idunno
I was wondering if you gurus could share some impressions regarding
the best media type for data archival. In particular which media type
would you trust for archival of important data you wish to take
off-line 10 or 15 years. Would you suggest tape like DLT or some
optical disk or MO?
I'm...

Bridging fc to scsi for NetApp filer backups by
Faeandar
I have a couple of Crossroads 10k storage routers that are giving me
nothing but grief. 98% of all issues with the setup are due to these.
The setup is:
netapp -- brocade switch -- crossroads -- tape drives
Idea is simple but implementation has been murder. I'm curious if
anyone is using...

looking for opinions on hotswap SATA drives as a viable backup solution by
Jason
I'm in the process of putting together a new backup solution for one
of our file servers and I wanted to throw my idea out there and see
what sort of flaws there are in the plan, that I can't see myself.
We've got a server that has outgrown its current tape backup (40/80
dlt). The server will...

sldt vs lto2 by
sergio
Hi,
i'm gonna buy a new tape 'cause the dlt 40/80 i'm using now is not enough
any more and i have to choose between sdlt and lto2.
Simply looking at the specs i'd go with lto2, but i'd like to know if
there are people that used both standards who can post their impressions.
Looking at lto2 drives...

Storage Resource Management by
Paul
OK, so the bosses are now thinking it would be a great service to go into
client sites and do a storage analysis for clients. I'm thinking I could go
in with a 1U server with a QFE and perhaps a FC card, plug it into the
network, point it at the servers with storage, come back the next...

Suggestions on data replication by
Rob Turk
For a Windows-only site with a couple of Win2K clusters, SQL, Exchange,
Citrix, and IIS I'm looking to build an overview of viable ways of real-time
or near real-time replication of data to a remote site. No access to raw
fibre, just TCP/IP with decent bandwidth (30-50Mbit/s dedicated).
I'd like...

Tell me about LTO tape by
Al Dykes
I've used DLT tapes for years. Today I'm working up a quote for a
client business that had no investemnt in tape and the server I'm
looking at a vendor that offers LTO tape drives. I assume they're
OK but does anyone have any war stories ?
The business will only use a couple of dozen tapes a...

RAID Controller Failover by
Steve Holly
I'm an IT admin starting to look at building a SAN for my company and I'm
curious if anyone out there can explain how some of the popular RAID vendors
(i.e. EMC, Chaparral, Infortrend) handle failover (resuming I/O with another
RAID controller after one has failed)? I'm mostly interested in...

Recommended stripe depth for Oracle on a Raid? by
Rick Denoire
In the next weeks, I will have the seldom opportunity to rebuild the
storage containing the DB. All file systems will be reformated.
We are using a CX-400 (Dell/EMC) connected via FibreChannel to a Sun
Server; Oracle is 8.1.7 by now but will be 9.2.0.4 after rebuilding
the Raid.
Papers I have...
