Internal -vs- External modem by
@drian
I'm considering a USR V.92 56K modem (no jokes, please!). They have
two versions, a "Performance Pro" internal version and a regular
external version requiring the serial cable. In the past I usually
steer to an external device for minimal setup problems (used to have
problems with internal...

SATA drive's bridge chip by
@drian
Does the bridge chip installed on Maxtor, WD and IBM/Hitachi SATA drives
affect performance significantly? I didn't realize that these makes of
drives didn't natively support Serial ATA. As I believe, only Seagate does.

WD360 + Intel 875PBZ + XP Problem by
@drian
I have installed two Western Digital Raptor 36GB drives on a test machine.
They connected via Serial ATA cables to an Intel 875PBZ motherboard. Intel
RAID is enabled. I have setup a RAID 0 array with 128Kb stripe.
Basically, I go through this sequence:
a) XP boots off the CD drive
b) I press F6...

PCI RAID controller? by
@drian
Can anyone recommend a reliable, quick and feature-packed PCI RAID
controller for use with a pair of WD Raptor (WD360GD) drives? I cannot get
my Raptors to boot to Windows XP using a RAID 0 array with the ICH5-R on an
Intel 875PBZ motherboard.
Considering it refuses to boot the O.S., I've...

Incompatible RAID controller? by

Recently as some may have read, I have been having trouble getting XP to
boot onto a RAID 0 array, using the onboard RAID controller on my Intel

36GB drives, hooked up to the Serial ATA ports of my motherboard.
I created...

Replacement motherboard by
@drian
Are replacement motherboards, say, from Intel, usually ones that have been
repaired from other customers or are they brand new? I contacted Intel
regarding a faulty motherboard I have and they told me when they get my
board, they'll send another one out within two business days.

CD & DVD burner on Primary/Secondary Master IDE channel by

I highly doubt this matters much, but if you had a CD burner and a DVD
burner, which would you put on the Primary Master and Secondary Master? I'm
considering installing these in a test machine I have and plan to install
the DVD burner on the Primary Master and the CD burner on the...

Quality black ATX case by
@drian
Can anyone recommend a quality black case with 120mm fan mounts and
provisions to cool two fast hard drives? Full or mid tower is fine. I've
tried the Antec Sonata but didn't like it as it didn't provide sufficient
cooling for the hard drives.
Thanks.

Maxtor reliability? by
@drian
I've been reading the newsgroups via Google for a few hours, and Maxtor
seems to get a bad name for reliability. One person after the next made
comments like "bought a Maxtor brand-new and within two months it died".
Are they *that* bad? I only ask because Western Digital, who seem to get a

RAID 0 by

Is using two drives setup as a RAID 0 array, a wise move for Internet

small-drive-big-drive be a better and safer combination? Or is it simply a

Wireless dial-up device? by

Hello,
Instead of running a 40 foot telephone cable from the socket on the wall to
the back of my dial-up modem, and running it around the skirting board on
the floor, is there a wireless device available that can cut out the cable?
Maybe something that transmits the signal to an ethernet adapter...

(2) Have you used the FireWire aspect of this board and experienced any

Thanks.
