What is dye based ink anyway. What is it made of. Has anyone made this stuff at home?

I want to buy a combination scanner/inkjet printer that uses refillable cartridges? I believe HP inkjet cartridges have chips on them that prevent refilling, ie after being refilled the printer still senses the cartridge is empty. Thanks, Mike
