Major upgrade by
Rene Lamontagne
I am contemplating upgrading my I7 950 system due to age, which I built
in 2010.
I would be looking at replacing 5 items.
CPU
Motherboard
Memory
Video card
CPU cooler.

CS8416 digital receiver chip [DAC] by
Flasherly[_2_]
Took apart the DAC I like and looked for the chip nomenclatures.
No wonder I kept telling myself the thing was special, either that or
my ears were growing aesthetics.
Tracked it to all over hifi forums and Ebay in kit form.
This one is minor, apart from knowing what the end of a soldering...

anybody remember "high-end desktops" in the 1990s? by
[email protected]
When I was at uni, the department had some SPARCstations and AlphaStations
with 512 MiB of RAM. I got a job with a geophysical company and they were
running Red Hat Linux (the really old stuff before they added
"Enterprise" to the name and started the version numbers all over). They
had brand new...

Can I virtually restore a PC? by
RayLopez99
Here's my dilemma: I want to recover some photos on my girl's now dead laptop (she spilled coffee in it, typical girl hehe). I have a backup. The laptop was a x63 Windows 10 system with an AMD chip that was 'soldered on', the modern trend where nothing is fixable, and the PC repair guy said it's...

Failing HDDs by
Charlie Hoffpauir
I have a couple of Seagate Hard Drives that Hard Disk Semtinel says
are failing. One is model ST2000DM001 and the other ST3000DM008. I've
removed both from my system and recovered the data, but I'm wondering
if there's anything that can be done to "save" the drives, perhaps as
backups, or is that a...

USB Type-C hubs (Power) by
Jim[_38_]
I have a Lenovo ThinkPad A475 and want to buy a Type c usb hub, but i'm
a little unsure how the power side of things come in.
Of course if i want to run say 3 HDD off the hub i suspect (correct me
if i'm wrong) I will need to provide it with more power than the laptops
bus can provide on it's...

Danger Will Rogers: UDMA Drive Cheksum S.M.A.R.T. Talking by
Flasherly[_2_]
Never heard a 6G/s SATA cable, stuck in between vanes in plugged
run-away thermal CPU cooler fan, up and get smart before.
But I did lose a mechanical HDD, not altogether so long ago, due to
deteriorating sector-seek errors of an unrelated and unknown state of
failure. Symptomatic of a grinding...

Soft/Freeware CPU Temp Capture Event Processing by
Flasherly[_2_]
Old standby, SpeedFan, on this octal. Along with Core Temp (author
Libeman). Both in the system tray. SpeedFan, however and for
whatever reason I'm sticking an older version, just monitors HDDs (one
mechanical and some SSDs);- It may not handle a somewhat newer AMD.
But what happened, with my...

Getting rid of HP services and software on your PC by
RayLopez99
In Windows 10 I no longer use HP printers or scanners, have not for years (last time I think I was running Windows 7 or 8 on this machine, so these HP settings may have migrated over from those OSes, since I did not do a clean install of Windows 10), but under the Task Manager, "Background...

Make it Stop by

A connector, in the back of the computer, a little jiggling around
things, and do I really deserve all this?
The HDD transfer issues, I thought heat related, were not.
Uh-oh. Danger Will Rogers: HDD failure.
Tracked it down, in Windows' reports, to a "page issue", an incessant
slew of worsening...

what hardware is needed for multiple-screen displays by
Yes[_2_]
I just saw an ad for an ASUS monitor showing 9 monitors in a 3x3 matrix
being used to show a picture. It got me curious.
Other than the monitors themselves, what hardware would be needed to do
that? For example, would something like that need 9 graphics cards,
one for each display? Instead, is...

Split DACs by
Flasherly[_2_]
Needed a TOSLINK laser splitter, which arrived from Hong Kong.
Works good once I filed down some plastic surround the plug adaptor
and figured a tip shorter than usual cables. Or bump it, when it
falls out of the soundcard socket.
It basically then gets the best I hear from both DAC units...

power used by just the fan in a power supply? by
[email protected]
I heard at a HPC presentation that the fan in the power supply of a 1U server
"pizza box" can draw 15-20 W! I looked up the specs of some 40 mm case fans used
to cool CPU, DIMMs etc and they were in the range 4 W to 13 W. So I suppose
15 W is plausible.
On the other hand, the larger case fans in a...
