Laptop battery no longer gets charged by
Yousuf Khan[_2_]
I got an older model laptop running XP, it's a Gateway MX6440, which is
about 6 or 7 years old now. I keep it around to run older software which
may not have been ported to Windows 7. Just recently I noticed that it's
no longer charging its battery. The battery is just over 1 year old, and
it...

CW417404 memory chips by
[email protected]
I have 2x 16MB (capacity confirmed on a P1 board) memory modules with these chips. Each has 16 pieces.
So one chip would be 1Mx4bit. The module itself is clearly marked as EDO.

Dvorak Likes Linux by

I've had it permanently installed on my desktop since version 5.10,

(after I upgraded the disk to 160GB). I now find myself using mainly
Ubuntu on the laptop, but the desktop still needs a few apps running

AMD Sempron ships by
Yousuf Khan
Looks like AMD has taken the wraps off of its budget Sempron line a few days
early.
http://www.internetnews.com/ent-news/article.php/3387051
There are two distinct lines of Semprons, several K7-based Socket A and a
K8-based Socket 754. The K8 Semprons have their 64-bit capabilities
disabled. The...

maybe he can successfully shed some more light on this subject.
Here are some more basics, just so that we're all on the same page:
* In theory one can have multiple I/O APICs in a system. In practice,
on the sorts of systems we're talking about here, there's only going to
be one. It lives...

Athlon 4 XP-M 2400+ ? by
A. J. Moss
I've just bought a new laptop with an Athlon 4 XP-M 2400+ CPU.
When idling, the CPU runs at 1.06 GHz; when working flat out, it runs
at 1.79 GHz (according to Windows XP). Surely this would make it an
XP-M 2200+ CPU? If the advert said it's a 2.0GHz CPU, should I send
the damn thing back?
Also,...

Advantages of Parallel Hz by
Radium[_2_]
Hi:
Below is an example of "parallel Hz"
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/2427/clocksignalexample8is.gif
If each clock signal is 1 Hz, and you have a billion of them,
staggered such that every 1ns part of the CPU can start, and finish,
an instruction - making the effective 'clock rate' 1 GHz.

Ok, Who's got the virus? by
Keith R. Williams
Somone on .chips has a virus and has been sending it out at a
prodigious rate. I just received a warning from someone (sans
virus) with an address list that looks like a who's who of
..chips.
I'm getting hit about once a minute. The virus is about 150K so
that's a lot of crap! ...and that's...

Intel Forced to Remove "Cripple AMD" Function from Compiler?
"In fact, Fog points out that even benchmarking programs are affected by

Why can't they make 128 bit PC...

Intel follows the margin by

Hey,
Anybody sobered up yet from the over-the-weekend I-told-you-so parties
yet? ;-).
Before you decide to load up any more than you already have on AMD and
to short any more than you already have on Intel, consider this:

I once actually learned something from this group by
Robert Myers
I came here a bit before the P4. The architecture of P4 seemed right
to me: highly-pipelined, clocked fast, and with big bandwidth to
memory. I didn't really understand about the trace cache, but I soon
learned. I was an early adopter, and I was disappointed.
The reasons for my disappointment...
