Question about implementing driver in Linux by
mishka
Working in Linux. We have to write driver that intercept all I/O to
disk and notifies user-more application with following data: block
length and device number. What is a proper way to implement it: to
write a block driver above disk layer or to implement a file system
filter ? If we'll implement a...

HP EVA4000 / IBM DS4300 / EMC CX3-20/40 by
[email protected]
We have a new solution out for design and three different vendors have
put forward three different SANs.
1. IBM4300 - seems to be more clunky on the UI than the HP and is
bagged by the other vendors as being a "basic" SAn, it is meant to be
poor because the operaotr still has select which physical...

EMC Centera by
Mahesh
Hello,
We are a user of EMC Centera. We have 8TB raw space.
I have a couple of questions -
1) Why is it that we have only 2.7TB usable?
2) We just got an email from our EMC rep that when the system reaches
85% utilization, we will start having performance problems. Any

We looking to replace our current AIT tape library with a LTO3 library.
Currently we are looking at Adic's i500, Storagetek's Streamline SL500,
IBM's 3310 and the Spectralogic t120. Is anyone using any of these
libraries? What are your experiences with the the library and the
company?
Thanks.

Attaching SAN disk to Solaris 8 by
[email protected]
Hello everybody.
I'm trying to attach a SAN storage to Solaris 8 V210 server using
Qlogic 2200 FC card. Already installed SUNWsan, SUNWqlc and SUNWqlcx
together with all patches it required. I can see adapter, port, disk
and LUNs via SANsurfer. But when I run "format" only local...

Flash density beating hard drives by
Paul Rubin
I noticed something kind of interesting but probably not all that
meaningful. The density (GB per cubic cm) of flash cards now beats
hard drives (dimensions from data sheets):
3.5" HD (750 GB Seagate Barracuda):
26.1 mm x 101.6 mm x 146.99 mm = 389.78 cm^3 = 1.924 GB/cm^3
2.5" HD (160 GB Seagate...

UFS 'limits'? by
anon
anyone know how extensively Sun or anyone else has tested
the scalability of UFS in real-world write-intensive
environments in terms of number of files and/or dirs?
i'm not talking theoretical limits, but what's actively in
use every day? We've had some issues with NTFS at
~100,000,000...

SAN/NAS Recommendation by

Hi Everyone -
We are beginning our quest to upgrade our existing Dell PowerVault DAS

Changing 2nd Hard Drive from Pata to Sata ? by
[email protected]
I have 2 PATA drives installed but , as the 2nd non-boot drive has
failed , I want to replace it with a SATA drive.
I understand that these drives do not require jumper settings to be
adjusted as they did in the PATA drives .
If I simply install this second SATA drive in its m/b connector ,...

We have a whole bunch of tapes (LTO I) that were written with Tapeware
(6.2). The drive that was used died and hence now we are stuck with a new
drive that Tapeware does not seem to work well with (neither our
antiquated version nor the latest trial versions). Tapeware tech suport
